| ... revival overlaid on contemporary structural engineering. It spurs a couple thoughts. First, it is remarkable how much thought went into the formal and ornamental languages being used, especially regarding contradictions between past and present. Second, it is remarkable how little thought went into the space programs. These architects seemed to have assumed space programs were sufficiently rationalized by modernists so as to be continued virtually intact. Further, they just plain didn't seem to care much about space programs. They almost never mention spac ... | |||||
| Nakasihma Stool | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | brbeard | General discussion | |
| I think I found a Nakashima "Mira" stool at a consignment shop. It was under a pile of stuff, so I didn't get to really inspect it. I didn't know it was at the time -- I just thought it looked kind of like a Nakashima piece (it was mislabeled and I don't really know his work too well, so I went on google and lo-and-behold, there's the stool). Anyway, were these pieces ripped off at all (in terms of unauthorized reproductions), to anyone's knowledge? Would all of the pieces from this era (c. 1975, I think) definitely be signed? If anyone's an expert on th ... | |||||

| I'm curious as to why Frank Gehry's edgeboard furniture is so very expensive for being made out of cardboard, and given that it's constructed via commonplace industrial processes (i.e., steel rule die cutting and laminating). More curious to me is the very high price of Gehry-INSPIRED edgeboard furniture, such as one encounters at cardboardchair.com. I like their furniture well enough (and I really like their bookshelf) but they don't have starchitect status, and they didn't invent edgeboard, and they're jumping on the edgeboard bandwagon 30 years after it ... | |||||
| Hello! I wanted to join in on | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | jspargo | General discussion | |
| Hello! I wanted to join in on this older post because I have a plycraft chair, just like the green one posted, but off-white. I got it for free and it is just in my garage because i have nowhere to put it. I didn't even know that it was a chair that collectors appreciate, I simply liked the look of it. The vinyl on it has gotten discolored over the years, and I thought about recovering, but realize that my not be a good idea. I can't find much information online about the chair, so I wanted to reach out. | |||||

| great news, thanks Leif - it is obviously a good one as I can't see the joins :¬) would you recommend an oiled finish once I have taken off the varnish (there were loads of chips and dents and it didn't look original)? I might get it valued if it is a good one - the rosewood one on the link I sent was retailing for £3k ish and obviously wouldn't be anywhere near that - do you have any recommendations? | |||||

| Trump's first home is going on the block today! It was first listed at $1.8 million (I think) but didn't sell because it needed updates (note that it has 5 air conditioners! no central A/C! yes, NYC is a bit north but having lived there in the summer with no A/C, i can assure you that it would be expected at that price point). Kind of amusing that it's being sold just before what will probably be the final nail in Trump's coffin---the third debate. | Niels Vodder moved and | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | General discussion | |
| Niels Vodder moved and expanded his shop in 1960, so this 1959 catalog is probably from just after the move. The move did not work out very well for him, as the anticipated increase in demand didn't happen. It is quite amazing that Wright persists in trying to sell these chairs with that completely preposterous attribution and description. It also shows you that the DFI can be less the perfectly reliable. It is hard to imagine that Hanne Wilhelm Hansen verified these as Finn Juhl's designs, seeing as she was his wife. The DFI must have made a mistake the ... | |||||
| Complete restoration of an Eames 670 | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | ChrisThomas | General discussion | |
| Hi everyone, I was recently taking my girlfriend out to dinner when we spotted a beautiful chair next to some soiled mattresses and broken air conditioners on the side of the road. Surprise, surprise, it was a vintage Eames 670 lounge! I think it's one of the best dumpster-dive finds in recent years. Well, we've taken it back home to assess the damage and it's not great, not terrible. The big issue is that it needs to be completely reupholstered. Someone didn't know what this chair was, and really treated the leather like dirt. Every single panel on it is ... | |||||

| Custom Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | ChrisG-52 | General discussion | |
| ... dishDrawer dishwasher, installed below, with a sink above it. The tricky park is, in order to stack them, the sink drain has to be in the back corner. The only off the shelf sinks with a corner drain are small bar size sinks. Therefore the project necessitated a custom fabrication. At first I only bid this job locally, here in New York City, and the quotes I received were astronomical ($2000+). I then decided to place bids nationally. Being a small item, a single custom kitchen sink, I didn't know how many fabricators would even be interested. Because of th ... | |||||

| It's twue . . . I didn't catch the duo mentioned. I think the whole group should be hired, for the first season of a show to be called "Debate !" -- where each of them gets to tell his story, and they start to interact in surprising and novel ways . . . At least something of use might be had from the ugly debacle. No wonder Kenneth Bone is now a national figure -- for fifteen minutes ? I can't find any photos online of yesterday's debate. | |||||

| Thanks SDR, I saw those same clouds from the other side. Your angle had much more color and drama than I got from my tree house (15 miles north of you). Probably since I didn't see them until they were past me a bit, so was seeing them looking south-east, with the setting sun behind me. They arrived and left in no time. Beautiful blustery day yesterday. It's always cool to see your sky shots, as they provide "triangulation" (the triangle being you, me and the seen clouds). Same clouds, different reality. And of course it's the nut behind the wheel. Heh. Grea ... | |||||

Woodywood edged out the pretty red headed smoker by just a smidgen. I knew (assumed??) that Dr Poulet and cdsilva would win the gift certificates for being so thoughtful, ... too bad they were socially obligated elsewhere. Pictures of leif were everywhere! The music cranked. I had such a nice time. I met a horny old man in the garage. Hope to see you next year! ... | |||||
