| Thanks so much for posting | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Thanks so much for posting this. I am familiar with a bunch of names on the list but one that I didn't know was William Steinmetz of Baltimore, where I've lived most of my adult life. I looked him up and turns out he was married to Betty Cooke, a well known jewelry designer who owns The Store, Ltd. where I've shopped many times! Small world. Great store--they have always sold beautiful art objects, housewares, jewelry and clothing. | |||||
| Mod Fiberglass seating - what do you think of this one? | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | Modern Millie | General discussion | |
| My friend and I found this fun mod seating in a local store, but we're newbies to the design world and, according to the seller of this piece, there's no story other than that it came from a midwestern college campus and was reupholstered and repainted. We didn't see a label (though we didn't look underneath). We're trying to figure out what justifies the $1300 price tag (other than the fact that it is an interesting piece of furniture). Can any of you knowledgable Design Addicts enlighten us? Does it look familiar? Anything we should look for when we go ba ... | |||||
| Irene of California | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dashes | General discussion | |
| So I found this pair of old round wood-framed (or maybe gesso) mirrors and while I didn't really want them, I noticed some very small, very faint writing on the back, and being a sucker for a good mystery, had to buy them just so I could figure out their story. Except, I couldn't read the writing! No matter what. All I could (maybe) decipher were two words "of California" -- and naturally I was thinking well, maybe it's Glenn of California, and then it's interesting. Only, it didn't really seem like the word in front of those two words was Glenn, it looked ... | |||||

| ... is good design. I didn't want decoration like the Michael Graves design. The Eva Zeisel Chantal just had an odd form for my kitchen. My mini RevereWare needed a pot holder. Something one uses every day should not be annoying. I use it for morning coffee, Chemex, heating travel mugs, Vietnamese and Thai cooking. (pouring over rice noodles) Tea etc. Often a few times a day. The Honer harmonic whistle will wake the dead, and when i received it yesterday and gave it a first cleaning i did walk out the front door thinking we had an air raid. But it is not the sc ... | |||||
| Incorporating MCM with other furnishings and in new homes | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dorieg | General discussion | |
| I have just recently gained an appreciation for MCM furnishings, mainly well-crafted wood pieced with clean lines. Luckily I didn't get rid of the Jens Rison coffee table my in-laws gave us when it wasn't my taste. However, I am not a MCM purist. While nice to look at, homes/rooms that are all MCM don't seem like "me", nor do I think they would suit my midwestern newly constructed home. Do you think it's possible to incorporate MCM furnishings with more traditional furnishings for a more eclectic look in a newer home that is lacking in character? This i ... | |||||
| The questions Lief asked are | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | gropius | General discussion | |
| The questions Lief asked are pretty crucial to getting any further. Just a pic of a drawer pulled out would be a good start. Without knowing more, I would say it looks American to me, most likely one of the North Carolina manufacturers (or possibly New England) that didn't put their name on their furniture. No designer with name recognition. I would further guess late 50's or early 60's, but again drawer construction is a good check on that. I have run across other pieces that are very distinctive, and have shown up multiple times on the net, but have never ... | |||||

| I live in Boise, ID so we have limited resources for designer stuff. I contacted the Knoll dealer in town to ask for any recommendations on who could help restore my chairs. They didn't know of anyone. 🙁 I also contacted Knoll directly and left a voicemail with someone but have not heard back. I talked to a local reupholster and in her 40 years of reupholstering she had never work with chairs like these. | |||||
| MCM 101 | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | Riki | General discussion | |
| By now, most of you design afficionados know I am only learning your finer points. Observation: I'm detecting a real divide between true pared-down-to-the-essential design and 70's over-the-top-kitsch. (Y'all are probably laughing your head off right now at me stating the obvious). But, some of that 70's stuff (I think) is really cool and "cocktail party conversation" pieces. Here's my question. If I stick with the clean lines that I am drawn towards in neutral tones, is it OK, in your world, to throw in a teal or citron or orange crazy accent piece l ... | |||||

| ... likely had metal leg cross support. This guess a result of no "Danish funituremaker control" branding which didn't get established until after 1960's (I think). Before I give this access to my house, I'm fixing it up. As much on my own as possible. I've already started nit picking away the paint splatters. I reach out seeking advice and help. The biggest issues (to my eyes) are the poorly replaced leg stabilizers, two dents on the table top and two cigarette burns. Would like to correctly replace leg stabilizers..but don't have a blueprint of sorts. Curr ... | |||||

They paid around $200 for the daybed, I believe. Anyhoo, I keep meaning to post pics of the daybed to see if anyone knows who actually made it. I was on ebay today, and wonder of wonders, someone has one of these daybeds for auction. Only they are listing it as a Hans Wegener piece and not a knock-off. I'm positive that it is a knock-off. It's a decent piece of furniture but not anywhere as nicely-mad ... | |||||

| I'll look into Roche Bobois early catalogues if I can find them. The other "sighting" of the Glostrup armchair at the top of this thread, was in an Italian interior Scandinavian design catalogue : http://www.bemodern.net/wp/wp-content/themes/thedawn/images/Cataloghi/Sc... But it didn't have even the manufacturer's name | |||||

| Another day, another page ? Thank you, Eameshead. Tomorrow I'm 74. Happily, I don't feel a day over 60. My late mother's b-day was Dec 21. It didn't seem to bother her -- except when she was a child, she said, because of the proximity to Christmas, for obvious reasons ! | |||||

| Yes, it's rosewood veneer and 671 ottos didn't always come with patent labels. Typically, there's a label to be found sewn to the cushion insert that lists filling materials. Polyester batting and urethane foam would be expected for '70's editions, IIRC. That was easy. Maybe consult a leather reconditioning specialist for the not-so-easy part. | |||||
