| it figures this is more over-regulation that has become way too typical in our culture. some people [or businesses, or governments] can't seem to shake free of the notion that we need regulated intervention in order to ensure justice. so rather than educate the so-called disadvantaged, they dumb down the system and impose unnecessary hardships on those who once enjoyed a market of valuable options. "you will do it this way and like it" becomes the heavy-handed dictum, and those in charge seem to have difficulty understanding why the thinking class are less t ... | |||||

| Apologies in advance for butting in : nothing to do with the topic being dicussed, but I decided to check out @aaronny 's "activity" on this Forum. Found the following thread and thought I would share a glimpse of the Forum back in it's heyday. And it made me realise, that I do miss Aunt Mark and his "random", hilarious posts. https://designaddict.com/community/main-forum/Random-thoughts-15909/#post-62241 | |||||
| Oxo Good Grip Angled Measuring Cup--Gr8t idea | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| ... the matrix on your imagination to think that poring and measuring could be any different. But it CAN be different!!! If you can take the blinders off. Measuring cups had a fundamental problem Solution? A measuring cup with a gauge you can read standing up. They were hard to read and inaccurately used because of it. Some unknown designer made a a cup with a gauge you can read while poring AND standing erect. And best of all the designer did not have to resort to implanting a chip in it and my head to achieve this alchemy. He/she did it the old fashioned wa ... | |||||

| ... the growth of a generation of designers that obsessively focuses on symbolic aspects of products and their equivalents in the market "branding and self branding" and that doesn?t know anymore how to classify joints. The search for a balance between the instrumental/operational aspects of technical objects and their semantic aspects constitutes the core of the designer?s work, without privileging one or the other domain. As the historian Raimonda Riccini writes: »The polarity between the instrumental and symbolic dimension, between internal structure and ext ... | |||||

| I will drop you a message @Elizabeth. I am happy to try to help and I certainly visit on the regular. I think as tktoo2 points out and I discussed with Herringbone today, in an ideal world we'd have multiple known members do it. Just so no one can take anything personally. Having said that, at the moment it appears to be more about clearing out than actually moderating human dicussion. | |||||

| Ah, we're back to this, eh? I've always wondered why we can't discuss this kind of thing like adults. Nasty, vicious, petty language always ensues. Then those of us who prefer a more civil tone get told that we're dull when we say be decent. By all means dicusss gender/sexuality/culture/education whatever, do it in a erudite fashion, versus world wresting foundation-style. | |||||
| Mr. Sullivan and Mies | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | barry | General discussion | |
| Mr. Sullivan and Mies To go back a little and jump out of the present stream to the form follows function statement of Sullivan quoted earlier. I read where Mies, in quoting the famous dictum, said that in our time, meaning early modernism, function was so short-lived that architecture should be much more flexible in order that it can better respond to change and this was one of the guiding principles of his work. To demonstrate this he used Lakeshore apartments as an example where he said he couldn?t remember 2 apartments being the same layout. It seems to ... | |||||

In the case of Gray, she was a female, bisexual/lesbian and an independent early feminist who made a lasting contribution to modernist design with her clean-lined, yet sensual furniture. But surely Gray was also more than these things. She was also a sister who designed her famous adjustable table for a older sister who loved to breakfast in bed. She was surely a dear friend to Sugawara her lacquerware teacher when she took him with her out of WWI France to live with her family back in London. What I have been trying to ...

| I agree with most of the criticisms of Mr. Quinze's work. But again, I am not out to praise, or damn, any contemporary designer's work listed on DA. Rather, I am looking at this and other work and trying to understand if there is tendancy in recent design that is discernible. Clearly bad taste and lack of skill and talent are as timeless as their opposites. 🙂 But I'm looking for what is now, so that we might better understand what ought next to be. Or perhaps more appropriately expressed, we need to understand what is happening, so we can understand how to a ... | |||||

For a masters programme particularly one would expect something akin to a masters programme anywhere else in the world, however this is nothing of the sort. It is essentially a glorified high school. Despite Italy's reputation for bureaucracy and an education system that leaves a lot to be desires, I foolishly applied for this course and was accepted. In the lead up to starting my studies there, there was a lot of contact from administration attemp ...

I think it would be a nice didactical experience, lke floating around in a boat with a glass bottom....a kind of window into the fascinating structure of rocks.
