| ... and simple; admirably succinct." The part that specifically moves me is the reference to "solutions". Whether a tiny, simple fastener or a grand building, all great designs noted for superior 'elegance' tend to reveal in a succinct statement - either the brilliance of, or the grueling hard work (or both) of the designer. As well, I find a facinating correlation between the elegance that we find in creation,in nature, and in the pursuit of that most elusive of scientific pursuits; The grand scientific theory. The most elegant of all solutions,to all of the m ... | |||||

| Heath... To see the delicacy in the brutal is the sign of some one who has studied the brutal, while on a mind altering substance. To see the brutal in the delicate is the mark of one who has not grasped the meaning of brutal in an architectural dictionary, or in Merriam Webster online. And "to see the delicacy in the brutal and the brutal in the delicate" is the mark of a fop amused by circular but empty word play. Otherwise, I am in complete agreement with ya, pal! 😉 | |||||

| Hmm did she say that in a movie ? I recall one of those odd 'forties black-and-white cartoon shorts that included charachitures (why can't I find this word in the dictionary ?) of movie stars of the day. I'm pretty sure Dame May Whitty was included. Do you have a photo ? We could turn this into a relevant topic by quoting movies or stars on design issues. . .or just showing interesting movie stills ? | |||||

| Yeah good points above. Let's hammer out an agreement right here! (I'm kidding of course... well maybe not) Even if we did annoint the word "Modern" a new meaning right here, it would still come down to how many people pick it up and run with it in the long term. And sadly, we have no control over that. But we could still just throw it at the wall and see if it sticks? OR create an unofficial "movement" to change meaning of the word, and at the same time use it to actively advertise and bring more focus to what changing the meaning of "Modern" IMPLIES. | Hi Riki, Thank you for raising the question. It speaks for the quality of the participants of this forum. I have to admit that I more often need the dictionary to write a decent text than to read the posts on DA. I am always quite pleased when I stumble over a yet unknown word, so I would go the other way and ask to use from time to time a challenging word. The dictionary is never far and in my own experience, something you had to look up gets a better place in my aging memory. I also enjoy the differences in tone between the English used in different parts ... | |||||

Its amusing to read the comments and at times insults of a company that claims to have solved the dreaded 'Eames Design Flaw' when at the end of the day they are affecting the strength, value and integrity of the product that they are fixing.
