| Using complex US terminology on this global website | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | Riki | General discussion | |
| ... from the US, are we making it harder for our global contemporaries to understand us by using American vernacular? Would our highly valued friends outside the US prefer that we stick to an easier vocabulary and discontinue the use of American idioms? For instance, in the paragraph above, did all of you have to run to your dictionaries to define "plethora"? And if you did, wouldn't it have just been easier if I would have written "with so many American contributors"? I'm asking because I want my posts to be clear and concise for everyone, not just America ... | |||||

| Although the thread asks "What is art to you," the discussion so far makes me think that we could do with a dictionary definition -- a place from which to wander off on our own individual paths. Here's a good one, I think, care of Wikipedia: Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography ... | |||||

| what does as-as mean? I'm getting quite sloppy with my spelling ( I refuse to use a spell-checker...and if I don't know how to spell the word (I'm a below average speller...), I am forced to look it up the old fashioned way (Webster's College dictionary). This method doesn't always work. But...... Oh well, Aunt Martk pour spell'r. | |||||

Your pictures show what I'd call a daybed. Sorry, no idea who made yours. A dictionary will tell you when "daybed" was first used.

| ... nearly all my stuff like that. Just went for a walk and got these fantastic dictionaries at an old bookshop, despite the covers which I'm indifferent to they are really well designed in terms of layout and readability, 2 volume English dictionary with translations into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish and Yiddish. I wonder if these days a publisher would do this when they could make more money selling individual books? | |||||

| ... it first and corner the information, or obscure it inside the vessel of folk art dictionaries like wikipedia edited by a combination of online communities who frequently don't know what they are talking about and master edited by persons with allegances to things that have nothing whatsoever to do with what is best for design, or designed goods, or persons who use those designed goods. We are about to lose what appears to be the last generation of designers trained in the European mastercraftsmen tradition. When they are gone, much of what they know about t ... | |||||

It is limited to original text, musical and other artistic works, sculpures, paintings, motion pictures, photography dictionaries, you name it...but not industrial design unless the piece is given the special status of work of art. Nothing specific has to be done under the Bern convention, but you may apply for registration. | fortunate means just what I thought spanky, I try to choose my words carefully. I and the dictionary define fortunate as: coming by good luck or favorable chance. 1. My mother and father were fortunate that through hard work and determination they (born during the great depression) came from what would best be described as poverty to people of means. 2. I am fortunate to be their son. 3. I too worked hard and was fortunate to accumulate cash reserves that make the current difficult economic situation good for me. Yes, I am very lucky.

| Exactly. Contemporary has little meaning beyond the dictionary definition of the word: Something consistent with the present day; an object designed and/or made recently. Modern, which at one time was another way of saying "contemporary," has survived as the overall label for design reflecting Modernism as a school and a style. These are my words; I'd be interested to hear from experienced observers and participants in the history of twentieth-century design for confirmation, correction, and expansion of these definitions. | |||||

| Just an idea It is indeed unlikely that spinning tops are high on the list of interesting design work and whoever finds it sculptural art should consult a dictionary but this being said, we never shied away from tongue ?n cheek threads so why not transform this one in a list of suggestions to the Herman Miller Corporation on major contributions to design history they could make by re-editing bits and pieces of the Eames family legacy. To start this exercise, my first proposal would be to produce the Eames doorbell, a series of four ceramic bells on a wheel? ... | |||||

| Bitossi fans (hello, barry) I didn't want to ask you before I posted these bird bowls on ebay because I didn't want you to think I was trying to be mercenary, but now that it's a done deal I'd like your opinion. Are they Londi? I think they are, just going by the impressions in the clay. I'm only familiar with the Rimini Blu stuff that you have posted on here and subsequent research into Flavia. I couldn't however, find a distinctive example of his signature or a dictionary of Bitossi marks through time, etc. Therefore, I didn't feel comfortable in att ... | |||||
