| The guy shouldn't have offered the 10K if he didn't intend to buy it without a provenance. The seller offered what he knew about it in the Ebay auction, and made absolutely no claim regarding the artist. He didn't even liken it to the work of Noguchi. The bidder sounds like a total dick-- ("STOP THIS AUCTION! I'll pay ten grand! Now, supply me with proof that it's the lost Noguchi I hope it to be.") | |||||
| What the hell? | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | Pegboard Modern | General discussion | |
| What the hell? I don't think it's silly. I think it's sad. This is just the kind of thread I would ordinarily steer WAY clear of, but since I like this discussion forum, I feel compelled to say something. This has been getting worse and worse for the past year it seems. Really, what the hell is going on? "Blow me dick breath"? "Likes the cock"? Would you say these kind of things in public to someone's face? What makes anyone think it's acceptable in this forum? Besides being outrageously rude, it also reveals a powerful homophobia on the part of the writer. ... | |||||

| Ooof! I hadn't noticed THOSE, Jesgord. Now that I've seen Cylinda scribbled with these little slogans, the old stuff that Jacobsen did seems WAY too plain, boring, and Scandinavian. The ad copy quotes only the shorter slogans ("Take pleasure seriously", "Start something new"), but you'll notice that the larger pieces bear longer statements, which I've copied below, for your design enjoyment-- CYLINDA COCKTAIL SHAKER: "On the tits of a barmaid named Gayle, Were tattooed prices of beer, stout, and ale. And on her behind, For the sake of the blind, Was precisel ... | |||||

And speaking of sets, I seem to recall now that Knoll/Saarinen were part of the dick Cavett show from my 1970s childhood (seeing the old Cavett shows now on youtube almost always bring a smile, but I'm a fellow Nebraskan). E.L. Doctorow was on Rose the other night, I believe. Haven't seen this show yet - he was on last year talking about The March, etc. So good to see someone on TV not a movie star or politician, those two entities becoming, in the world of big money and marketing, essentially one and the same thing. They've made a conscious decision to market some of their produsts at prices this high, the point surely, is why? | I confess... | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion
| I confess... I've always loved dick Teague's AMC Pacer, not the chassis and engine, or build quality, but the styling. I love it. And I think it is in any conventional sense of design language impressively articulate. I would much sooner buy a contempo-retro version of the Pacer, than the Mini, or Fiat 500 re-takes, if the performance and quality were made equal. The Pacer updated the streamline language to the 70s in what I think remains a timeless design. But so far in small cars, buyers prefer cute, to streamline, and so we must endure the Minis and the F ... | |||||

| Thanks Lucifer I appreciate the advice and I don't think you came off as a dick so don't sweat it. I have always been good at buying and selling and recently my new found passion for mid-century pieces has me interested in the possibility of making some money off buying and selling these items (maybe just enough to finance my own mid-century purchases). I just got into this within the past month so my knowledge is unquestionably limited, I do however have a thirst for knowledge and a willingness to make mistakes, get flamed by people who know more than me bu ... | |||||

The category of MidCentury is extremely broad, and fiercly competetive - but that competition is based on highly specialized knowledge. Take the Eames for instance: they are very popular, very well documented, and yet there are hundreds of variants on their furniture - the slightest of which can cause the price to skyrocket or plummet. Not to mention you live in Boston area which presents it's own set ...
