| Question about Saarinen round tulip table | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Donald | General discussion | |
| Saarinen tulip tables. Beautiful to look at. But does the trumpet base make for a steady table (especially the bigger diameters)? I saw one in a store that was quite wobbly/shaky... The salesman said it was because "the floor was uneven", but...you know, he was a salesman and the floor seemed even to me. Any feedback from users/owners of tulip tables about their stability ? Thank you. | |||||

| teakhound--you probably know that you can buy short lengths of brass tubes in different diameters, right? I recently bought some for a totally different reason and thought about how they'd be perfect for cutting replacements for just these parts on chairs. For anyone who's interested, Ace Hardware sells them online with free pickup at your local store. http://www.acehardware.com/search/index.jsp?view=full&kwCatId=&kw=brass%... | |||||

| Pretty sure those bases are indeed "universal", Heath. Though, they came in at least two different diameters scaled proportionally to larger or smaller table tops. Same with "contract" bases. To my eye, the aluminum group series looks best, as your chair does, with a vintage oxidized patina. The coated versions are just awful in any color. Clear might be the worst with that hideous "aubergine" a close competitor. | |||||
| I have about a dozen vintage | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| I have about a dozen vintage butterfly chairs. Mine are all different sizes (like, inches different in width, mostly) and at least two different diameters for the steel. Some have nicer welds than others. And some have the bent tops and some don't. I got covers at circa50 but people have complained lately about their service. Whatever you do, make sure the material doesn't have much give! I made one out of a very heavyweight denim that felt extremely sturdy, but it stretched a couple of inches when anyone sat in it--which made it hard to get out of. I ... | |||||
| Help Identifying Vintage Eyeball Lamp (Italian or Dutch Origin?) | 1 Relevance | 2 years ago | Rue232 | Identification | |
| ... Spherical metal shade (125mm diameter) with 12 ventilation holes, a wide chrome band around the front, and a height-adjustable chrome stem with a black knurled adjuster. Base: 125mm diameter, cream-painted top, chrome band around the circumference, with a toggle-style switch. Height: Adjustable, with a total height of 370–372mm. Weight: 1,020g. Markings: Internal wiring has a “Kema Keur” marking, suggesting Dutch certification. However, similar lamps are often attributed to Italian manufacturers. What I’ve Found: The shorter, non-height-adjustable version m ... | |||||

| ... are three (3) “layers” of the table from table top to pedestrial base. And this is how it looks like with my table: A) Metal Base with a wooden panel/plate and three screws. B) Middle plate almost as big as the diameter size of the table top. Made of dark wood. This middle plate/panel also has two bolt holts that I cannot identify what it is for. The bolts also has threads inside. C) Table top which is the Sahara Noir marble. But it has a sticky mesh on the bottom of the table top. I have more pictures but can only upload 1 it seems. 🙁 Based on what I’ve fo ... | |||||

| ... be read from it. I don’t expect it to be anything super valuable since its build quality is not outstanding, but I’d really want to identify it. Let me tell you what I know: - it’s most likely vintage (the yellow label looks like at least 30 years old) - the lightbulb socket is made from plastic. - the cable is in some kind twisted thick string while the lamp is hanging on a strong string which is attached to a device that allows for adjusting the height at which the lamp is hung (rolly) - the uppermost cloche is something I cannot seem to find in any simil ... | |||||

| I think they look smashing... I think they look smashing together. And for an identification I think you might have to go the long route and start getting diameters of medallions so that you can start eliminating makers. Not exactly the ideal way to go, but at least it would be progress. I don't envy you the frustration of trying to identify this beauty. | |||||

| Hardware-store dowels are made of softer woods today than in the past -- and in less-accurate diameters. I recently had need of a 5/8" dowel and found, among all the rubberwood or agathis (?), one heavy dark birch dowel. Hooray ! Who knows how it got into the store . . . | |||||

| . Unless you are lucky and can get a good one from an otherwise trashed lamp I think you would need to have one made up. It shouldn't be too hard as you can certainly buy perforated metal sheet in all sorts of thicknesses, hole diameters etc. A bit of cutting, shaping and soldering and you are in business | |||||

| Hmmm Difficult to say with certainty. The glides certainly appear to be vintage with discoloring over time. Bent rods are a common occurrence with used, vintage bases. Judging from the photos, the black finish looks a bit shinier than the ones that I've seen. It's possible that these are just in better shape. Measuring the rod diameters may provide the most definitive answer. The rods do look to be a bit thicker than vintage Herman Miller (difficult to tell for certain from photos, obviously). | |||||

| ... thing in front of me, it's much easier to figure it out! I think once you pull out the weft cords at front and back, it'll be obvious. I used to get cord from Frank's but then they got a bunch of inferior quality stuff. I talked to Mr. Frank on the phone about this and he said he had a source for better cord lined up, but I ended up switching to HH Perkins in Connecticut. Their cord is excellent quality and it does cost more BUT the shipping is a lot cheaper for me since I'm on the east coast, so it works out pretty well. That said---you can get samples ... | |||||

On this album you can see a set of 4 chairs that I bought that have the THONET label on the underside of the seats (can't find the model information but I like them anyway); the 4 Semi lamps from Fog & Mörup designed by Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup (25cm, 2 x 60cm and 70cm diameters); a set of bra ... | |||||
| saarinen tulip table height? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | ~L | General discussion | |
| ... because my elbows are too high and can't lower them ;)!!!. So I am thinking the table is too high or the chairs are too low. No way am I getting rid of the chairs, so the problem here lies in the height of the table. What is the traditional height of a Knoll Saarinen tulip table? Also, what are the normal diameters of the tables? Mine is 48" and is a little too large for my space, and 36" is way too small (42 would be ideal). What I see is over 50" and I just can't do that either . thanks for your input, ~Elle | |||||

| ... can consolidate the two. What I really wanted to do is to answer the question of the holes. They are not drilled. What comes out of the mould is one continious wall with uniform wall thickness (probably 3-4 mm thick depending on the size of the vase) We have special tooling to cut holes (a pointed sharpened stainless steel tube) and of course one could have tubes like that for different diameters, but I would prefer to avoid it. As to accuracy: The mould would have a small round edge for each hole, to indicate (as a groove in the product) where to put the t ... | |||||
