| SDR , here's one of my mottled rocks. I have two or three and they're all exactly the same. I remembered them a little incorrectly--I thought the circles were rust colored but they're just lighter gray. But there is some brown in there too. The spots are about 3/8" in diameter, I think. Any thoughts on what kind of rock it is? Is it another variety of granite? | |||||
| Aalto stool: Is this genuine? (pics) | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | peter osullivan | General discussion | |
| I was given this Aalto stool last night at a party in London There are no manufacturers markings on it I have checked the Artek site and there is nothing similar listed the top measures 340mm in diameter and it is 300mm in height The closest listed is the NE60 which measures 380mm in height and 380mm in diameter Although its pretty beat up its still very sturdy, it does look like a genuine ply construction however the veneer is missing and damaged in several places Could this be a genuine piece or the more likely reproduction? | |||||
| eames/vitra debate | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | apollo | General discussion | |
| It was interesting to see the debate of the 4th nov. Where I think LRF outlined a list of criteria that would deem an Eames longer ottoman a fake. One of these being, if it did not have a four star base. Being based in the UK, it is general wisdom here that chairs with a five star base are post 1980 (of course not a hard and fast rule) and as such later copies. This as most of you will know was due to an American health and safety law requiring swivel chairs to have a five star base. Nearly all European chairs pre 1980 chairs have four star bases, including ... | |||||

| ... cabinet and an eames LCW thats what I mean by socially pastic but if I look at a 30's bakelite ashtray and a kartell stool I get bored with the sameness. Timber is remarkably cheap for what you can do with it too, c. $ 70.00 Australian for a 1 metre diameter teak coffee table and the waste is totally clean, you could eat it if you wanted to, the same with hyde glue and tung oil. Plastics is clever, timber is wise! Where has dc wilson gone? | |||||
| Tapio Wirkkala 'Gaissa' for Iittala | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | alexandersforum | General discussion | |
| Today I found four Liqueur Glasses and four Shot Glasses from the Tapio Wirkkala 'Gaissa' series, which he designed for Iittala in 1973. I left behind a decanter from the same line, since I didn't think I would have much use for it and it is also not nearly as nice as the glasses... At home tonight I started to do a bit of research on the Gaissa line and realized that I couldn't find any info on the decanter anywhere. There is another more regular looking decanter in the Gaissa line which is still available from Iittala, but the one I saw was very differen ... | |||||
| I used to run into that | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | tktoo | General discussion | |
| I used to run into that plaster over terracotta block fairly often on Beacon Hill and in the Back Bay. Tapcon-type screws work pretty well for that application, but the pilot-hole diameter is critical so I recommend buying the specified bit from the screw mfr. And one of those new-ish compact cordless impact drivers is almost the ideal tool to use, too. i think your original question related to the stiffness (resistance to sagging)of MDF vs. other common shelving material. Almost any solid, defect-free wood of the same dimensions will outperform composite bo ... | |||||

| Damages to Eames fiberglass | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | alexandersforum | General discussion | |
| It seems I am only posting about damages to my different Eames chairs... This time it is worse than just a few scratches... I received a couple of armshells from the US the other week. The box was in terrible shape and had a few holes through it. This was partly due to a bad packing job (which the seller refuses to admit), but also to some rough handling in the shipping. I hope I will get some money back from the insurance... It seems I am only posting about damages to my different Eames chairs... This time it is worse than just a few scratches... | ... Solid teak table tops of 43" diameter are not that common. Second, I can't say that I appreciate the use of conical leg capital for this design. Conical capitals (and other capital designs) were developed for building structural columns to better spread out the vertical loads over a larger surface area, thus reducing the chances of shear failure in the slab (punch-through). Whether this table is solid teak or veneer, there are no feasible loads that would warrant any type of column capital for structural purposes. Therefore the capital can be viewed as a vi ... | |||||
| There are a lot of genuine | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| ... I could not find any that had that groove or joint around the perimeter of the top of the base that yours has. I'm hardly an expert on these tables so I don't know the significance of that, but I do know that they were widely knocked off over a long period of time so I tend to think that yours is probably not genuine. You could also take a photo of the base from straight on against a plain background and compare the radii of the curves, and the diameter of the stem and top and base to the photos of the real thing from a licensed distributor or Knoll. Many ... | |||||
