| They discussedthis recently on NPR... and what I came away with was that the term "modern" speaks to a specific time in history and gives things like "post modern(ism)" its context. Contemporary would refer to what we are trying to call "modern" today. If this were science, then we would be held more accountable for the correct use of these two terms, but since it's not I think we all have a similar understanding/connotation for these two terms. | |||||

| "honest wear"?? As opposed to "dishonest wear" | 2 Relevance | 14 years ago | objectworship | General discussion | |
| ... kids before they buy it. Not very logical! Speaking of child labor sarcasm, I sometimes enjoy inserting (quasi-?) hyperbolic references to exploitation when discussing certain styles of luxury goods, as the market for some things seems to be chiefly made up of the GO HALLIBURTON sect of the populace...class and perceptions of good taste...which "distressing" is definitely not an example of, contrary to these people's false perception. Distressing/Dishonest Wear: It is SIMULACRA, a LIE to APPEAR as if one is the threadbare-oriental-carpet-type. It is imitat ... | |||||

| Funny how discussing this see... Funny how discussing this seems right (or at least ok) with Wright but imagine trying to fiddle with anything by Mies, although even there the 'fabric' of the Lake Shore Drive curtain wall is obvious. Are you familiar with photoshop Olive? Using the cutout or posterize filter followed by find edges/desaturate and upping the contrast and then printing it off in tiles would give you a pattern to work from. | |||||

| I see nothing wrong with discussing decking material here Which doesn't mean I can offer useful advice, however. I will go on the record for being anti faux wood grain, though. The fact that it's a man-made material doesn't offend me, I'm sure the stuff has its pluses. But, why does it have to ape wood? | |||||

| What table are you guys discussing? I have been following this thread with great interest, as I am on the verge of buying a 36 inch Tulip table from Eurstyle.com [ http://www.eurstyle.com/continue_shopping.php?item_id=265&config_string=... ] The list price on this site is $2816, and eurstyle.com has better prices than most! So the question, is what table are you guys talking about that's only $150! http://www.eurstyle.com/continue_shopping.php?item_id=265&config_string=... | |||||
| RE: Really dissatisfied with new Eames Lounge Chair - other owners' experiences appreciated | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | J44 | General discussion | |
| Hey all, somehow this is one of the only places/forums I’ve found discussing issues with the eames lounge chair. Why I’m here- I purchased one from DWR about 5 months ago. Someone sat in it and went to get up and now the button is loose, popping out easily when I sit in it. If I slide up to get out, the button drags under me and can get caught on my pants. I swapped the ottoman cushion for the seat one hoping this was a one off. But now another button is doing it. For $5k the construction seems so poor for this to be happening. I’m physically able to pull t ... | |||||

| The discussion of price is frowned upon here really. So regardless of your credentials, you won't find people here trying to assign value to pieces. Something is worth how much you're prepared to pay and how much the seller is happy to sell for. You can work that out on your own, because all that really matters to you is the first one! What are you prepared to pay? 😛 Kyle | |||||

| I am glad this discussion is bringing up some very interesting concepts. cdsilva: thank you for the video too; I watched it yesterday evening with my wife. Good to know how the new pieces are made; it would be great to have another video showing how everything was done back then... Cheers Ernest | |||||

| Honestly, the more discussion | 2 Relevance | 9 years ago | Kyle Barrett | Identification | |
| Honestly, the more discussion I see about these loungers the less I want one. They're beautiful, but like owning an expensive car, I don't think I could afford one long term. That is a VERY expensive reupholstery job. However, I do think the upholstery outside of the seat cushion could be sufficiently repaired rather than replaced, right? | |||||

| ... that I'm getting kind of stupid! I came across one for sale by a private party that is a little different from the new ones available. The seller claims it's been in his family for a long time, that it was made prior to Herman Miller production and so lacks the distinguishing markings along the side of the glass, which by the way is only a half inch thick, compared to the 3/4" ones they make now. The photo shows the base as not being flat along the top or the floor, but slightly concave, so there's a thin curved gap between the upper base piece and the glas ... | |||||

| I appreciate this discussion and the photos very much. Just to clarify...I have the tall, sprung 3 cushion, non leather version. Besides trying to determine how to 'handle' the sprung cushion as far as 'stuffing' vs 'wrapping' (since we found the two interiors we opened and looked at quite different with foam vs cotton felt) both of the cushions we opened had muslin (or thicker) covers prior to be slipped into the cushion cover...it does not look like your fabric covered cushion had a muslin slipcover holding everything in place.... without the slip cover ... | |||||
| This enticing discussion | 2 Relevance | 11 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| This enticing discussion raises a subject I haven't had enough of, yet: the interplay between East Coast and West in the mid-century period of modernism. If a West Coast institution happily accepts this little catalog (one wonders how many other exhibitions in a similar vein graced American cities in those years . . .) it would be a sign that the West is still open and welcoming of the East-Coast/Continental influence -- as I believe it to have been, then, when Lost Angeles burst open with adventurous housing and craft design. Surely Harvard Graduate Scho ... | |||||
