Space Horizon 24 B

For the past 20 years, Jos Devriendt has been working with the mushroom as an archetypal form translated into functional sculpture. Part of an ongoing series known as Night and Day, Jos Devriendt’s lamps express his interest in the ways in which time and atmosphere can transform our perception of objects and contexts. Deftly rendered in porcelain, each lamp is a mushroom-like form illuminated in the daytime by natural light that lters through its delicate porcelain. At night, the same works appear to morph, abstracted by the glow of electrical illumination from within when a switch is turned. The color of each piece changes and further rede nes its scale, and its place in time and space.Jos Devriendt describes his purpose as follows: “As a sculptor I want to reshape the form from day to night, sole- ly with light: the daylight, which shines upon the sculpture and the arti cial light, which comes from within and erases the material form. After researching the form, I experimented with di erent colors as a means to alter the meaning of the form. Like abstract painters use colors to give a meaning to their work, I do in a three-dimensional way.”glazed ceramic, electrical components 40 x 38 x 38 cm14.9 x 14.9 x 15.7 inBorn in Ostend in 1964, Belgian designer Jos Devriendt’s works are based on a late-surrealistic concept. His industrial designs are handcrafted and present simple solutions for rather complex problems.Devriendt studied ceramics at the LUCA School of Arts and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Ghent.Selected solo exhibitions2018 Space Horizon, Pierre Marie Giraud gallery, Brussels, Belgium2017 I am I, solo exhibition, Demisch Danant gallery, New York, USA2016 Stone Garden, garden sculpture, Stokerijstraat, Ghent, Belgium2015 Squeeze and Eclips, Pierre Marie Giraud gallery, Brussels, Belgium— The fantastic world of Jos Devriendt, jewelry and displays, Caroline Van Hoek,Brussels, Belgium2014 Night and Day, Pierre Marie Giraud gallery, Brussels, Belgium2012 WES – Work, Eat, Sleep; and Plata, outdoor design, White Interiors gallery,Ostend, Belgium— Futurospective, Fiskars, Helsinki, Finland2007 Prototypes for Furniture, De Uil gallery, Temse, Belgium2006 End of the vase, overview 20 years ceramic vase design, Matin Gallery, LosAngeles, USA2004 Urn & Cradle, De Buck gallery, Ghent, Belgium2003 Plates, May 17 Gallery – Fabian Van Severen, Ghent, Belgium 1997 Porcelain tableware, Marzee gallery Nijmegen, The Netherlands 199 Sculpture, St. Jacobus gallery, Ghent, Belgium1993 Oil Lamps, Louis fashion store, Antwerp, Belgium1991 Black, Surplus gallery, Ghent, BelgiumSelected collective exhibitions2009 Darkside of Earth, Galerie Pierre Marie Giraud, Brussels, Belgium 2004 Terres d’Asie , Chateau des Bouillants, Dammarie-les-Lys, France· — Du bronze au jade , National Palace Museum, Tapei, Taiwan· — Retour de Taiwan , Galerie Arcanes, Paris, France
