My early 1960s Dansk pepper mill had seized up and wouldn't turn.
I couldn't find any photos anywhere to see how it came apart.
Eventually I figured it out so thought id share a few photo's and a brief description.
This is what I did
I soaked the mill in methylated spirits. This dissolved the glue holding the top section. which I could then remove
Then gently tap the timber cylinder through the mill using a bit of dowel and a hammer.
Let it dry out then lightly sand the cylinder till it just fits and turns smoothly.
Replace in mill
Glue the top back on being very careful to use only a little glue and not let it run back .
Hope that helps anyone else who has the same issue
@huntercollector1 Thanks for the description! Could you concretize which part of the cylinder did you glue? Only the top part in the to head piece of the mill? How does the lower part of the body only stay connected to the rest of the mill?
Yes I used only a small amount of white glue on the top cylinder part.
Re assemble the grinder into the body of the grinder .
Then put a small amount of glue on the side of top cylinder . Then slide the top of the grinder over while holding the grinder end in at the base.
When the glue is dry the upper and lower will stay connected .
You could leave it a little looser if you prefer a courser grind.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Ah okay. I'm in the middle of a restoration project and your insights will definetly help.
How long did you let the mill soak in the methylated spirits? I let it soak in overnight but the cylinder didn't seperate from the top piece - maybe it will need just more time to dissolve the glue.
