What are you using to strip the lacquer? And is there any sanding or abrading involved, even the slightest bit?

Generally strip using meths and 0000 grade wire wool....then use natural stain 50/50 linseed and turps

although I have also used commercial stripper and then neutralised with white spirit and also a random orbital sander with fine grade discs in the past

Without photos or a precise knowledge of what process caused which effect it is hard to say. I can see two possibilities. First is that Brazilian rosewood is black when freshly cut. UV light bleaches it very much. In my experience the bleached layer is not very thick so a little bit of wood removal will change the color a lot. Second is that there is a chance of a chemical reaction with steel wool and the tannins in the wood, perhaps facilitated by some of the chemicals you are using. I think this is less likely though. I think you are just removing the bleached wood in spots with the steel wool and definitely with an orbital sander.

thanks Leif. I guess for future that means when removing old polish just keep to meths and rags. However once you have blacken rosewood do you have any thoughts as to how you can recover the situation and get the natural grain colour back?

The natural color of Dalbergia nigra (Rio Rosewood) is black. If is it because you have removed the very thin bleached layer that it becomes black, you will need to bleach it will UV light. I can imagine a tanning bed perhaps...?

Looks to me like you sanded off the bleached layer, revealing the natural color.

Leif,

so in terms of redial action do you think I should bleach and then stain?

I think you should ignore it. It will eventually bleach itself back to match. Might take a while. If you must speed up the process then you need to get some extra UV light.

I would not even think about messing around with any other bleaching techniques. They either will not bleach the wood or you will destroy the table entirely.

Variation is the nature of the species. Every piece is unique and will often change over time depending on exposure and/or environment. Vive la difference!

stripped with meths and 0000 wire wool. Bad scratch in corner so used sander there but with pretty fine paper as I recall
