I should probably start this thread by saying I've found several tutorials on how to restore HM shells, but those are a bit too heavy-handed for my liking (sand to within an inch of their lives and soak in thick coats of Penetrol).

I'd like to keep the patina of my shells, but repair the exposed fibres and get rid of ingrained dirt. Attached pics should show what I'm working with (freshly cleaned with Oxyclean and soft brillo pads).

I had to remove the wide shockmounts and tried different sandpaper grits to see what the effect would be (40 to remove epoxy, 120/220/400/800 to finish), but found this a bit too invasive.

Three of them will need sanding and a light coat of Penetrol (very dull, milky patches of fibres, black ingrained dirt in the fibres), but I would like some tips on how to spot repair the other four. Any tips on what grain of sandpaper to use to blend with the surrounding surface? Should I give all of the shells a very light coat of Penetrol afterwards or leave as is?
