Vintage Dansk Teak Pepper Mill: What Was The Original Finish On These?

Hi all,

I have an old Teak laminated Dansk pepper mill and salt shaker. I believe the design is called a ships wheel with the four pegs in the sides to fill it. It has a Peugeot grinder in the bottom half. The exterior finish is shot and I want to refinish the piece.

Question: What did they originally use to finish the exterior on these? I would like to refinish it as close to original as possible.

I have read on some sites for refinishing food product items using 100% Tung Oil.

I also read using food grade mineral oil and beeswax heated to form a paste and applied to the project.

Any suggestions or preferences?

Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a mineral oil and beeswax mixture for cutting boards that I got at Williams Sonoma for my soapstone counter tops. I have to do the same, and this is what I plan to use.
Tung oil would also work.
You might also use a mixture of mineral oil, raw linseed oil (also known as flaxseed oil, and available in natural food stores), and turpentine. Mixed in equal parts. Just don't use boiled linseed oil. This is what Johannes Aasbjerg recommended for his furniture, and it is food safe.
