Well, my recent interest in vintage modern furniture has already forced me to learn some upholstery. Now, where can I find some good references online for wood refinishing?

I'm especially interested in learning techniques that are geared, first, towards restoration. i.e. if there are some tricks you can use without completely stripping the finish, I'd love to hear about those.

So any leads? Or any tips?

HI MJF, I too am in the situation you find yourself in. I have enrolled in a 10 week french polishing course for starters. However I feel a restoration course would be better. I have just bought some books from Amazon, when I get them I will have a flick and give you the names and first thoughts. If you live in the UK check your local adult education centre to see what courses are local to you.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah,...
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'd appreciate it if you let me know what books seem to help.
Any other tips, anyone?

Google
"furniture restoration" and "furniture refinishing." There's plenty of free advice out there. Caveat emptor, of course.
Now Google "caveat emptor". . .

The books came through from Amazon. Best one seems to be "Understanding Wood Finishing" by Bob Flexner, ISBN 0-7621-0621-2. Check it out on Amazon.

a really helpful forum....
is www.refinishwizard.com - there are a couple of regular contributors who will patiently explain a lot of stuff. after a lot of trial and error on an old troeds rosewood sideboard they put me on the right track (after reading my lengthy explanation of what i'd done so far) and got me french polishing. the only thing to be aware of is that, although well versed in refinishing items, they can sometimes advise a course of action which would destroy the patina of a mid 20c design piece. they like feedback and appreciate pics of the finished article. good luck, paul.
