You can figure it out pretty easily just by measuring. Upholstery fabric is 54" wide. Each piece should be cut a couple of inches bigger all around.
I don't have a Saarienen tulip armchairs sitting around to check but would guess that 5.5 yards would be enough for three of them, maybe even four. Maybe your upholsterer misunderstood?
