I recently acquired 6 of these dark brown Krueger fiberglass chairs and though they may not be Herman Miller, I've absolutely fallen in love and would like to preserve them as best as possible.
I bought them in a rush because my wife and I hosted a Christmas dinner and they served us very well. At first we were just going to store them, but we liked how they went with our Danish table so much that we've opted to keep using the combination as our dining room set for now.
Anyhow, I have a few questions that I would greatly appreciate advice and/or opinions to steer me in the right direction:
+ I used a product from Meguiar's called "Ultimate Compound" that was intended to restore an abused finish. The chairs were shiny and looked great, but after a few days, some scratches and marks I hadn't seen before were more apparent - was this a mistake and should I avoid this product in the future?
+ I've read the Chairfag tutorial and know that he went through a sequence of wet-sanding and spreading Penetrol, but these chairs seem to have a glossier finish than Herman Miller chairs. Should I just skip the sanding and just clean and use Penetrol to restore shine?
+ Lastly, one of my chairs has a stress crack. I know that it's commonly agreed that stress cracks aren't worth repairing. However, the chair is still functional despite the damage and I would like to prevent any further splitting. I've seen marine fiberglass repairs, but that would be a bit excessive for a shell chair. Would an epoxy product or gasp(!) JB Weld be an OK fix?
Thanks in advance!
- Joe
