Hi,I just picked up this lovely Kai Kristiansen rosewood dining table. It has a rather unusual problem with the veneer at the edges of the table in the middle where the two plates meet.Either the veneer at this edge has sunk, or more likely the veneer beside this has raised slightly. You can see in pic #2 where I've sanded the table the 'lower' veneer hasn't been touched by the sander when I passed over it. I was wondering whether I could heat the table with an iron to push the veneer back down again, or is there another easier solution. Also where the lower and raised veneer meet, it has split along a line the entire length of the table. Repairable?Regards,Ian.
Here's more photos with a better camera. It's difficult to really show the problem. The veneer isn't loose. It is lower at the edge of the table and split where it goes from high to low. All four plates on the table have the same problem - very strange. And yes, it is solid underneath the two layers of veneer.
I realized what the problem is: wood movement. The edge banding and internal substrate are different materials, subject to different rates and amounts of expansion with humidity. And one has greatly expanded or shrunk more than the other.
I am not sure there is a good way to fix this... Perhaps someone else here has an idea...
