I love this love seat that was damaged by movers. I am going to restore it. Does anyone know what wood this is made from? Oak? Ash? The pieces were lost by movers and before I go to a restorer I want to know what I am talking about. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Ouch. Hopefully no pieces lost. Looks like oak to me.

Smoked oak,
I think it was a treatment using amonia that coloured the wood.
Seem to recall reading about the process some time ago.

The process was called fuming -- exposing the surfaces of wood furniture (typically, oak) to the fumes of ammonia.  I doubt that any production furniture made since the War (at least) has this finish.  A few makers of reproduction Stickley pieces might still  be using the process . . .

When legs are broken off, even when the pieces are saved, proper repair is difficult if not impossible -- certainly, invisible repair is out of the question.  New material of full length is indicated.  If this seating piece is to be repaired and then reupholstered, one would be better off starting from scratch -- it seems to me.

Carl Hansen has done this, post WWII, as an available finish on e.g. the Wishbone chair (Y-chair).  I had a couple of early specimens (1951-ish) with this finish.  It is very good looking.  And it still is an available finish in fact.  I believe Carl Hansen calls it "smoked oak."
