I just acquired an early Knoll Bird chair that has some condition issues that need attention. For one, the original fabric is in good condition, but the foam is on it's way out. Has anyone successfully peeled the fabric away from the foam and installed a new layer of foam. I hate the thought of loosing the original fabric.
The frame is finished in white Rislan and there have been some weld repairs. Does anyone have any suggestions for repainting these areas? If I were to simply prime and paint, I obviously would not replicate the original thickness of the Rislan. Also, most white spray paints would be too stark. The original finish appears to be a little off white. Again, any suggestions?
thanks,
Mike
No.
Sorry, but it's not possible -- well, not cost-effective, anyway -- to peel the fabric off the foam and reuse it; you need to buy a new cover. Fortunately, Knoll's 15%-off sale just started.
If a painted repair won't satisfy you, it's unlikely that any spot-refinish will. To achieve a perfect match between the original welds and the repairs, you'll have to remove/replace the nylon coating.
