Hi all,I have recently purchased a vintage 3105 AJ chair and I am now trying to restore it.The chair is in very good condition but the previous owner did some strange things to this poor chair: the shell is covered with a thick layer of very dark brown wax and the feet have been painted in black. My plan is to remove all the wax and the black painting to recover the original look of the chair. The chair has a nailed metal cap which apparently means it is from the first serie produced (1955-1962). From what I've read on this forum the original finish were laquered lack, beech and teak. I've removed a bit of the wax to see what was underneath: wood veneer. It certainly isn't beech so I guess it should be teak. Unfortunatly, after drying the wood is very very dull (probably coming from not breathing for decades under the wax).I have no idea what was the original finish of chair: varnished or raw. There is no trace of varnish on my chair so I guess it should be raw (but it might have been removed by the previous owner). In that case, I guess I should oil it, right? Thanks a lot for your help!!!Xavier (France)

I don't think any of the older production FH Jacobsen chairs were stained or varnished.  Later they became available in dyed and lacquered/painted colored finishes (not sure when exactly).
