hey DAs,
thought id try to start a thread on items we've re-purposed in our homes.....
being on a tight budget, i fully appreciate ingenuity and creativity in meeting needs/wants around the house in clever and affordable ways...the old saying "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade"applies..please post any and all things you may feel fall into this category, big or small
and without further adieu i present you with my towel-rack-as a-wardrobe from everyone's worst enemy/guilty pleasure IKEA...it lends itself very well to our decor and is perfect for our small living space, as it takes up no floor space, and most definitely "un-clutters" our entryway. and once we can locate one in our price range, will be underlined by an upholstered bench of sorts..and some small nylon wheel/chrome pulleys with hangers attached for the bottom bar for multiple jackets so as not to scratch....
anyway, lets see what you've got....
I bought these two...
I bought these two Danish-made rosewood cabinets at an auction for $5 (total). They're the wall-hung Cado type cabinets (but some other brand, I forget which) but there were no other pieces with them so no one wanted them. Yay, me.
I had a set of 8 tapered black wooden legs that I cut down a bit and stuck on the bottom with hangar bolts and T-nuts. Et voila! Nightstands.
Soon I will be ditching that IKEA Malm bedframe and ridiculously thick mattress for something lower and sleeker. Then these will be too tall, I'm sure---but for now I really like them.
The other one has sliding doors, not drawers. And please do not shoot me for drilling a few holes in the bottom! If I had any hope of acquiring the rest of the parts at a price I could afford and in a timely manner, and if I even had a need for the whole thing, I wouldn't have done it...
thanks luna....
I'm a bit of a hat junkie...the nightstands look great, and for $5 and a little elbow grease?!, I'm sure that just sweetens the deal....
keep it going DAs!...i realize that this site is more geared towards original design and things of that nature, but re-purposing seems to go hand-in-hand with the "modern" that many of us are living in i.e. economy, environment, etc.. I'd like to see more of what you folks have...be it a hand made, modified, or completely re-purposed anything....thanks
does this count as re-purposing?
the japanese especially adore the work of this young british design duo

eames table
I found an eames table with a wrecked laminate top for next to nothing last year. I cast a concrete top for it so I could use it outside as a patio table, (I had some leftover additives/pigment from a countertop I did for a friend). It works great and has held up really well.
