Hi guys,

I occasionally come across these type wood sculptures (see pic) in books on midcentury design, but unfortunately, there's never any info included. I find them rather intriguing. I'd really love to know more.

Basically, I am interested in anything I can learn, such as: Does any one know who made these ? At what time they were sold ? Through what channels ? Only in the States ? Can you still buy them today ? Where ? Do they cost a lot ? Are there sites with more details on these ? etc.

brian willsher
Hello,
Brian Willsher made similar sculptures:

or

His work seems to crop up in many of the midcentury style books. I've seen a few of his pieces on ebay.co.uk recently.

Thanks for asking this good...
Thanks for asking this good question. I have the same thought from time to time. The first MCM book I ever got was RETRO MODERN and there are quite a few in there ... some really tall ones as well. There's doesn't ever seem to be info on them ... as you say.

I had a look at the Brian Willsher site. I don't think these sculptures are by him.

You are just toying with me now about my Witco llama. I'm not crazy about that cat creature you just posted, by my llama was sublime.

The sculpture on the desk is ...
The sculpture on the desk is almost certainly by Brian Willsher (if not its a copy) They actually date from the late 60s onwards (he's still working, although old). Andrew Weaving, who wrote Retro Modern, has a gallery in Marylebone London which sells Willsher's work.

Cat? Llama?
This is a Kangaroo. It's about 5' tall and it's a magazine rack.

Yes, nice desk. And, above all else, the sculpture on it turns me on.
