On some of the chairs there seems to be some sort of crimped metal tube holding the the rope together, does anyone know anything about this process or the materials? Is the rope protected in any way? I seem to remember something about it being dragged through bees wax first.

Stupid me, I've worked it out now, its just little lengths of tube and doesn't need to be crimped.

Actually...
The joining areas are crimped. Check out the pictures at PP Mobler (let them play through and you'll see the crimping being done) http://www.pp.dk/index.php?page=collection&cat=2&id=13.

Their image to illustrate, the rope doesn't look waxed.

Not waxed
It definitely seems like the halyard is natural. I've been very tempted to use it on some designs but I've always wanted to sit in that round chair and see what it felt like first. Unfortunately, not too many places are going to have that chair in stock...

.
I want to try it too, fortunately its cheap by the metre. I wonder if a woven grid would stay in place or shift about?

I think it could stay in...
I think it could stay in place depending on how the intersections were fashioned. Most of the materials the danes used for seating (other than leather) are very inexpensive for the materials but require craftsmanship and time to execute...lot's of time.
Speaking of which, time to get back to weaving my chair, only a few thousand more feet of cane to sort and weave...
