People who stain woods aren't welcome in my house. Awful habit.

Neither in my house. I use always clear danish oil + bee wachs.

Stains, dyes, toned finishes, and even opaque finishes like paint play legitimate roles in wooden furniture production and restoration when used appropriately. Even Danish oil alters the appearance of bare hardwoods.

It's a shame that legitimate usage is few and far between.

Historically, stain is not applied with a design ethic that I appreciate. And I mean historically in a literal sense, in addition to the more colloquial 'in my experience' sense. And I certainly would say their usage is far more legitimate in restoration.

Paint is another ball game, I can quite like painted furniture.

And bare wood is another question entirely!
