before going any further with this huge pile of work, i would like to know if this site would be of any help.....
go ahead shoot me!
Interesting site
Interesting site - altho, despite claims of objectivity there is some bias against the licensed version. He states twice that altho the current licensed production has the knoll stamp and Mies signature "ironically, the original 1929 didnt have this" - as if the current signature devaulues the chair.
Also, he fails to point out that, while Knoll is the producer of the chair, the rights are held by MoMA in NYC - which recieves royalties from the sale of each chair. I think this is an important note, especially with the claims of Knolls profiteering off of the chairs legacy.
"Ironically, the original version does not have the signature on its frame."
Makes me mad when I read it.
Think of the Mies' etched signature as an extension of the manufacturer's label, and NOT a design modification. Labels change over time, there is no irony comparing a recent label to an early label, the piece is the same.
It would be more accurate to read: "Though the original frames were not marked, Knoll added Mies' signature to current production, to combat the proliferation of unlicenced copies".
To state that there is an irony because of this signature, misleads the reader to thinking that Knoll's production is not faithful to Mies.
Is is the same as saying that it is ironic that the new Noguchi tables have his signature on the glass edge, because the originals did not. If you take into context the reason behind the added signature, then there is no irony at all. It is just an extension of the Herman Miller label, and that's all.
On the technical side...
This might be one of the things you're still working on but your DIVS aren't floating correctly to center the content, at least on my machine (powermac G5 w/ Firefox or Safari). Kudos to you though for taking the time to make a site that so many people always wish existed.
