Dr P, your bird looks like a variation on the J V Orel bird, which I believe was made as this clever scissors-holder and also just plain. It's been knocked off quite a bit, even by Anthropologie (trendy US chain store) a few years ago. I have one made by Zooline.

I am not sure what the taller bird species is but if I ever find one in a thrift store I will die right then and there from happiness.

Ahah true that there might be inspiration there but my bird has hidden features!

If you remove the head, you got a bottle opener. And the leg/foot is a cork screw!
