I recently picked up this nice little record cabinet, and I haven't had any luck with attribution. The base is what really drew me in........it's well made, looks to me like the secondary wood may be beech? Any help/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

wc

Looks like walnut veneer to me. Also there is no edge banding on the veneered top, which is not typical of higher end production.

It is cool and has a nice look, but I expect that there will not be an attribution forthcoming. The brass finger pulls and walnut make me believe that it is probably American.

thanks Zephyr..........you may be right, but I'd honestly be surprised if it were American and/or walnut.........the photos are probably not a real accurate representation as to the tone/color. I hear what you're saying on the lack of edge banding, and agree that making any kind of attribution may be a longshot..........but it certainly doesn't hurt to throw it out there.

Doesn't hurt at all, and I would not claim to be right all the time.

It is less the overall tone/color, and more the grain pattern that makes me think it is walnut. That and the variation in color on the close up pictures. Teak tends to have the same color, with different light and dark areas, and also potentially dark streaks. Walnut can have a lot more color variation close up, which is what I am seeing. Better pictures will always help, but being sure whether it is walnut or teak, probably will not help the overall cause. I agree that the base has aspects that look Danish, but the upper case, just does not.

In any case, as with any free advice, it is your choice to take it or leave it.

The base stretchers are also laminated pieces of solid wood. This is much more of an American thing than Danish.

The appearance of the edges of the top seems unlikely to be original. If American, it could well not be edge banded, but it would have been very thickly stained so that the substrate would be much less visible. Or it could have been edge banded and and it was sawn off at some point.

It is odd that the inside bottom of the piece seems to be stained solid pine.

Could it possibly be a home made piece? Or a custom made piece from some local cabinet shop?

More photos of the wood and perhaps the underside of the piece could be illuminating.

thanks guys, I do appreciate the help.

Zephyr, thank you for your responses, and for the insight into your thought process on the piece. I'll always take advice, though I'm admittedly a bit stubborn ha. I really enjoy picking up bits of wisdom from people more experienced than myself.

Leif, same goes for you, thank you for the insight. I haven't been around the board long, but you have always been helpful when I've had questions.

I'll get a few more pics this weekend.
