i just purchased one of these tables and now i have a dilema - it is too tall! i love all other aspects of it though. when it arrived the legs and stretchers were very loose (though undamaged). i would have to take them off to reglue anyway, so i had the crazy idea to make an identical leg and stretcher set that were shorter. i would only do this if i could attach the new legs in a way that were non permanent and non damaging to the table. i would of course store the original legs carefully for the day when someone else owns it. i have searched long and hard for a coffee table that will work for me, and other than the height, this one is perfect. i have also always been a strict originalist. so - am i nuts? bill

Don't mess with it
Golly...if it's not right for you, sell it. Don't EVER alter a valuable item like this. You'll just ruin its value.

Hmm, I'm not nearly as opposed to this as barrympls. If you were proposing cutting down the legs, that'd be one thing, but fully-reversible alterations are another. I say go for it, as long as you hold on to the original base for future use. I see absolutely no problem with that.

Disregarding the value
I think it is beautifully proportioned
Get a lower sofa 😉

thats the thing
though, i have to reglue it anyway. so if i can keep the old legs and make the change entirely reversible (truly no evidence of it ever having been changed)then what is the harm? if my standards of perfection are met then the value would be no more affected than the necessary regluing will do anyway. now do you see my question barrympls?

Maybe that's
a good idea ? But I agree that you have the right idea about what to do to preserve the original base and make a new one -- if the fastening matches the original, too. Sounds like a nice project.
Nice table. Unusual shape ?

robert
when i get my camera back i will try to post a pic in situ. if my couch were any lower, i wouldnt be able to see over this table. it is taller than a tulip side table! i have never seen a coffee table this tall. I am a huge juhl fan, but i cant understand why it is so tall. what i have now is a dining table for my sofa!

Is it a console table rather than a coffee table?

i dont have much experience with them but i would have to say no. too low and no straight edge to go against a wall.

.
22" height -- unusual for America, anyway. Perhaps for taller seating, which doesn't seem to jive with tyical Danish modern as known in the US in the mid-century.

What exactly is a Console table?
I just bought a cute little table at the Salvation Army Thrift store. It is solid Mahogany made by Hungerford. I am trying to find out something about it. It is about 1.5 foot wide by 2 foot deep and has one drawer at the top and an open cabinet space from the bottom of the drawer to the bottom.
Thanks,
Holly

Sounds like
an "end table," meant to be placed next to a living-room chair or sofa, often with a table lamp placed on it ? You didn't mention the height, but I would espect it to be no more than 24" high.
A night stand (placed next to a bed, with lamp on top) would be similar except that it would not be two feet deep.

console table
tall and narrow, and often long, generally for use inside your front door to put your stuff on when you first enter and need to unload. some times used behind a sofa in an open setting. heres a link to one of my alltime faves.

22 height is more of a side table,
I think is perfectly fine to change out the legs you obviously went to some trouble to obtain this certain table if reversable. You might want to omit the streachers in your redo, as they are less called for and might help with the scaling down of the piece?
