I am a long time lurker, but it is my first post. My partner and I are in the process of setting up a home office. Both of us are acedemics, so we like to have a desk; but for space purposes having two desks seems bulky. Is there a desk specifically designed for sharing? Or should we get a long and lean table and sit on it diagonally? Thanks!
Diagonally ?
I'm not sure how you mean. Would the desk(s) line up side by side along a wall ? If so, in what way would two conventional desks take up more room than a custom unit ?
"Partners' desks" have traditionally been made as a large unit with the users facing each other. I take it you don't have the room or the desire for this configuration ?

We simply do not want two desks; we have a small room and we don't want it to look like a dorm. We are currently inclined towards getting longish table and sit facing each other, but on opposing corners (one north-east the other south-west) to make use of the space. We are mounting a huge shelving unit, so we can keep most desk clutter on it; or on a wheeled cabinet.
This is all we came up with in order to have a home-office in a very small space without making it look like a dorm. Any other ideas are welcome.
Sounds
good to me. I think you have it covered. Let us know how it works out. How long should the table/desk be ? There are a number of dining table options that may work; I tend to like a narrower table myself (36 to 40 inches), though they might be harder to find. You can always have such a top made to your specs, one of the easier things for a cabinetmaker to produce.
try this table.
