Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me a clue as to how sturdy the three drawer George Nelson Steel Frame dresser is. A friend says his mom has one somewhere in her basement collecting dust. He knows I am looking for a mid-century modern piece to put in a nook in my dining area. The reason I am worried about sturdiness is I have a 14g biocube saltwater tank that is sitting in the nook (on a very non-modernish and ugly) stand. The tank, water, and live rock probably weigh around 150lbs. Is this dresser capable of holding that type of load? My friend said it was pretty sturdy when he checked, but I thought I would get some additional input.

Also, I will probably take the dresser regardless as it is free. I am going to have to repaint. This piece was in his mother's room (a cast-off from her older brother's room). Anyhoo, they apparently painted the front of the drawers pink...ick. I believe my friend said that the frame was black. Were the drawer fronts offered in white? I would like to make the colors ones that were offered from the company. Thanks!

I've never heard
of it collapsing from anything.

Apparently, his mom actually...
Apparently, his mom actually has two of these Steel Frame dressers. They were part of her bedroom set when she was younger. They were originally used in her brother's bedroom and then passed on to her. They have been repainted...pink. She said that she doesn't remember the original color and that she is fairly certain her father sanded it down to the wood before repainting them so unsure what the original color was. She thinks maybe blue but not sure. Anyhoo, since the original color may not be able to be determined, when I receive these pieces, would it be possible to sand them down yet again (get rid of the horrible pink paint) and just stain the wood? I really like the versions of the Steel Case dressers where the wood was stained and not painted. And what type of stain would I need to use?
I am taking both dresser regardless of if I can put an aquarium on top or not. I offered my friend's mom some money for them but she wouldn't accept any. She said they have just been gathering dust for years and years and she is just happy to be rid of them and that they would be going to someone who would enjoy them. Really sweet lady.
