Well, that's life, I only wanted to point to the fact why there is nothing to find on the net about the history of France & Søn, because somebody - was it you, Leif? - was wondering about this fact considering the stature of the company - with the result, that I'm accused for "pissing all over H Moons good work."
Wow, thanks a lot, Heath.

Indeed it's very amusing, here in Denmark FF furniture is seen as IKEA of the fifties, true quality was made by other Companies, FF was just a big seller like IKEA today and therefore the furniture was constructed in a very easily way for the export.
Amusing to see how FF is seen today as premium product outside of Denmark, times they are a-changin?! ;-))
Business Opportunity
I am enlightened to understand that the work of France and Søn is not well respected in Germany and Denmark.
You apparently have higher quality one piece furniture (i.e. not knock down) available to you, that was economically not possible to sell outside of driving distance from the workshop. (I'd love to hear some of the highly regarded names you have in mind for my own education).
So from the point of view of distance (the USA in my case), France and Søn is very much on the high end of the danish furniture we see.
Which leads me to a business opportunity idea: you could buy up lots of poorly regarded F&S pieces in Germany and Denmark, knock it down for shipping, and send it to the USA, et al, and make a healthy profit re-selling them here where they are well regarded.
Hey Marie (and Onno)
As Leif I'm very interested in your view on the level of quality and design within the danish furniture making business.
What sort of firms were really high end and aren't very well known today? Or deserve more recognition?
My Grete Jalk lounge chairs, made by Jeppesen, are knock down I believe.
I was under the impression...
I was under the impression that this was a design forum, rather than a woodworking forum, and that the reputation of France & Son is primarily based on the designers who worked for the company, and the desirability of that design work. And not on whether or not one can find other chairs made in Denmark that have tighter fitting joints than what France & Son was making.
Woodywood, how about naming names,
or were you just referring to all the Chinese knockoffs coming in these days. If you're talking about earlier Danish copies, I would certainly be interested in who / what they are. The spring weather is still a little chilly in Los Angeles and if I have any Danish derivative crap I wouldn't mind feeding the fire with some of it.
cheesedanish,
I think...
cheesedanish,
I think woodywood was referring to the cheap particle board danish and uk 60s & 70s furniture American dealers buy at auction for $30 to $60 bucks a pop in europe and import into the USA by the container-full where they advertise them as "fine quality, imported mid-century danish teak furniture" and sell to unsuspecting customers for a shitload. I know there are a couple of these types of dealers here in northern california and a few more in so cal.
