lot of great input...thanks
but still trying to get away from the ikea expedit...and the ol' collection has been recently pruned and is still coming in as a heavy weight contender...and the spines on a lot of mine are fairly tattered so nix on the good looking display..they are rather dear to me, and some of them extremely valuable, which is why i wouldnt mind spending a decent amount of $$ further down the road...but right now, i enjoy the roof over my head and the food on my plate, both of which seem fleeting and endangered more often than not...maybe ill go with a few PS cabinets from ikea,...the vertical ones...who knows...any other suggestions???...
p.s.Heath- would love to see how that shelving looks in you place...that type of shelving here is readily available used and mega cheap and would certainly tame the rest of my collecti....

Its in the workshop, next time I'm down there I'll take some pics. Maybe you could rout a heap of 5mm aligned slots in the top and bottom of the shelves in something like that to keep it all tidy. It is very cheap and pretty good quality for the price.
Hey, wait a minute, Matty...
You can weld, right? Why not just buy some square tube and angle, and some expanded steel sheet or wooden boards for shelves, and build your own LP storage?

alas....
i havent got any tooling or welder of my own....or would have long ago...my specialty is custom metal work with a touch of woodwork, so ive come up with many a design, and no way to execute...even considered going the easy route with threaded blackpipe and various fittings, but if i did..itd have to be floor to ceiling, and i rent...so no dice drilling into the ceiling! guess im S.O.L. for now...
Crude but...
This may sound a little crude but a friend of mine who has a huge record collection came up with an idea that actually looks pretty nice. He uses terra cotta chimney flue pipe which comes in rectangular and square shapes and simply stacks plywood shelves with edge banding in between them from floor to ceiling. The flue pipes make nice cubbies for displaying other items in with his records and breaks the monotony. He stained his shelving dark walnut which is a nice contrast to the terra cotta. Oh, and it is easily broken down and transported since it only relies on gravity to hold it together, but quite sturdy due to the weight of the flue pipe.
