I like the versatility of furniture which can change shape according to its use. Drop leaf tables, customisable unit furniture systems, etc. I am thinking of replacing my sofa with a sofa bed but for regular use, as I frequently host paying guests in my apartment. But would like to use it occasionally as a sofa when the room is vacant.
Problem is that I don't think hardwearing regular use sofabeds were that popular in the middle of the last century, probably not in America for example where space was never an issue. Sure, you have convertable 'daybeds'... but I'm not convinced these were for regular use (what the hell is a daybed anyway, short of a marketing term?)
So, if anybody can think of a hardwearing, solid, sofa/bed or futon for regular use, I'd be interested to hear your suggestions.
Thanks in advance

I like the lines of this one.
As for 20th century sofa beds, I know my grandmother's house had one that was probably purchased in the mid '60s. It was probably purchased from Sears (nearly everything we owned was), so they must have been somewhat popular.

I think it depends on the issue
Mine was made by habitat 10 or so years ago and is made of foam. I don't use it as a bed on a regular basis, but see no reason why it couldn't be. Mainly used when i have overflowing guests.
I think the original ones may have either been spring or feather filled.
