any idea where this genius coat rack could come from? in the context of the location I would guess maybe scandinavian, japanese, or even african...?
It would also be interesting to know, if there are some designs close to this one available. any idea on it is very much appreciated, thanks!

No.
The first photo below is the TRA. Notice that it's nothing like the stand in the OP's photo.
The second photo is the TRA-RA; that's probably what you were thinking of. It's closer, but it's not the stand in the photo above.

Precise Boring.
I agree, woodywood. It's quite ingenious. Really, it just doesn't get any more "less" than that.

Pretty
sweet, no ?
I've drawn some tables which use that construct as the frame -- but nothing has been built yet. It's nice to see this example. I suppose this could be used at home, though it reads as more of a commercial-use piece . . . ?
It's necessary to coordinate a tapered boring tool with the taper of the turnings, for a snug and stable fit.

Splayed Legs and Stability.
The beauty is reminiscent of itinerant carpenter's and bodger's knock-down horses of yore.
Oh, and, yes, I know, we don't need no stinkin' bodgers!
