i have a stool with BR51 base and the seat goes all the way down to the bottom of the base and it's held up by a retaining clip.
i came across with what seems to be an older version of the stool with an ALCOA base. but there is no retaining clip at the bottom of the base, instead, it has a flat head screw. also, the outer perimeter of the bottom of the base is painted in white, so only the center curved up portion of the base is in raw steel finish. one last thing is that it has small round felt pads all over the rim of the base.
do the above descriptions constitute that the stool is authentic knoll?
thanks,
fb

I'll bet that it's authentic, fb.
I have a pair of older Knoll stools, but neither of them have any Alcoa markings. Does your stool look similar to mine?

mark,
the stool that i have is exactly the same as yours (with BR51 base) as i stated.
but i am trying to authenticate another stool that i came across that has an ALCOA base.
i know that ALCOA made the base for KNOLL but i am hoping to get further verification with reference to:
- the absence of the retaining nut
- the presence of a flat head screw
- small round felt pads along the rim
my understanding is that the older ALCOA base came with a metal strip along the base/rim of the base and then later on was replaced by felt strip. but this base has felt pads instead of strip.
thanks,
fb

The felt pads have no significance.
They were added by a previous owner after the original floor-protecting strip was lost.
Have you tried to disassemble the stool?
