Oh, and...
the 'hobbit' house is horrifying!

Thanks for elaborating Olive
Appropriate to the country... Well, I can buy that to some extent. It's not the same thing as handmade, or showing the hand of the craftsman. That touch is visible in a Finn Juhl chair, which is everything but rustic. I am back to "unfinished" as a definition of sorts, but it is clearly not enough. Perhaps rustic could be described as "unsophisticated", in the more literal sense of the word, i.e. without any negative connotations?
Yeah, that "hobbit house" sends shivers down my spine. Bilbo's house in Lord of the Rings wasn't that bad though, and actually not that rustic. I doubt the house in podboy's pictures was built by real hobbits.

Peace Designs
lovely...but how you got 'rustic' out of those designs is beyond me. They're gorgeous, but very sophisticated and show a high level of precision construction. To me those are the antithesis of the rustic concepts.

Bill Peace is quite a nice designer, but I agree, I don't see his work as rustic per se. He occasionally uses a material or two that you might see in a rustic house, but I think of his work as more polished than what you'd expect rustic to be.
Just my 2 cents. But, then again I sort of think that about Bruce Goff as well. As groovy as his work is. Go back to the top of the thread and view the first few images once more. They're rougher.
