Looks more like walnut.
More accurate ID of wood species from photographs requires well-lit, sharply focused, extreme closeups of both end grain and flat grain, if possible.
Edit: Otherwise, Leif's guess is usually better than mine!

While I have faultered before, I have worked with a fair amount of Walnut, and this looks a lot like what I have worked with.

Thank you for the replies. It was the really dark areas/spots that seemed unusual to me, but I certainly trust your more experienced input. I think you got it right.

Walnut gets a short shake, IMO. Perhaps because we see too much grayish kiln-dried, straight-grained veneers on second-rate furniture that looks, well, kinda drab. Some of the west coast "Claro" varieties and timbers with figured grain (as in your example) can be quite spectacular and have always been valued as a premium furniture choice.

we have what is termed Black Walnut out here in Oregon. It is lovely. I had a mantle made out of it with a live edge and it is amazing. Extremely attractive.
