I have an old wooden box that I love. It was the original packaging to one of the world's best delay units for guitar (Deluxe Memory Man, for those who might know). The box itself is nice, and the graphics on top are great.

The problem is, in my younger days I used it to store my, um, "herbal jazz tobacco." It stinks. Any ideas for removing the smell and light ash residue safely (without discoloring or removing the painted on graphics)? I have no idea what the wood is, I am guessing birch or something, but it is unfinished and blonde in color.

I would love to display the box and possibly use it for my ugly remote controls, but I don't want people to come in thinking I threw a Rasta party the night before. Thanks for your help!

I once
took a short drive to the dump with an ash can in my VW, filled with the remains of a clambake. The rotten fish smell wouldn't dissipate. After a couple of days I recalled something I had read, so I tried it. The recipe called for fresh coffee grounds to be "burnt in a pie pan, and left in the space overnight."
It worked.
I have no idea if this is your solution -- but how could it hurt ?

Hints From Heloise:
put the box in a plastic bag... fill the bag with clay kitty litter... leave bag closed for several days, to absorb offending odor.
Voila!

Or relive your past
and continue to keep your hemp (or, if you will, your lids) in the box.
You could call it your second childhood.

Either way it's all good 😉

Have you
coined a new syndrome, Whitespike, known as "Prepartum Depression"? You're supposed to be depressed after the kid comes, not before.:)
As for your lingering aroma, did you try just wiping it with white vinegar on a rag? It works on cat pee, it might work on, uh, recreational pharmaceuticals.

Thanks for all the help! I will try one of these as soon as my parents leave! 😉 They popped in for a visit. I don't really want to explain what I am doing.
I'll probably try the cat litter first .... being that I have a cat and already have the stuff....

How about a dryer sheet?
Like "Bounce" or whatever? Find one with a scent you like.
I read that was a good way to remove mildew smell from old books/magazines, but you have to be careful that it does not stain the paper in a book - I guess there's some sort of oil or something. So bear that in mind, maybe put it in a porous container of some sort before locking it inside.

Ozium
Apparently a product called 'Ozium' is supposed to remove the smell of pot better than any other. Below is a link to a message board praising the wonders of Ozium. If you just use your, what do you call it, your Google, you can find online stores that sell Ozium. But living in Austin, I'm guessing you can find it locally.

I thought Sen Sen was the best way to
get rid of the smell of pot. Oh wait, that's for the breath....I'm giving away my naughty teenage history.

that took a while SDR 🙂
I like the German, gestank.
I would leave the box alone. It's got a bit of history. Patina.
And it seems to be bringing up some memories. You may miss that smell
someday.
I Like all the hints. Coffee grinds?
I know the kitty litter trick. And a favorite, roasted orange peel, baking soda.
I have a four day weekend.
On my long list is to sell my old truck. Smells like...(old dog balls)
Nothing works.
I'd rather smell a vintage clam bake than dryer sheets.
