I'm not a wood expert, but I think the underside might also be teak - teak that hasn't seen sunlight.
Here's a photo of the outside of my teak BPS cabinet. The second photo is of the inside of the door which hasn't been exposed to sunlight - well, that wouldn't be 100% accurate as that is where the booze is kept so it is exposed to light on a daily basis but only momentarily!!!
Anyway, as you can see the dark grain on the inside has completely disappeared on the outside of the doors.
It may well be teak, Patricia. Every tree is different and some do indeed display dark streaks and figured grain that we might associate with some of the "rosewoods". Some makers prefer a more monolithic appearance on face veneers as these are somewhat easier to work with when matching adjoining pieces and will relegate the irregularly figured sheets to interior or backing duty.
As a rule, though, I'm hesitant to ID particular species from photos unless it's really obvious and, with many "exotic" species, particularly the rosewoods, it's impossible even in person without scientific training and microscopic analysis.
I am sticking with teak. And exactly right about the lack of sunlight where those dark streaks are. The underside fin is something else. It looks like it might be stained beech, but that is vague guess (and doesn't really matter).
Interesting that the foot held in with a metal clip. The Aasbjerg technique is all wood. I have wondered for a while if the way the feet are held in is an industry wide standard. Got my answer: no.
therye -- you're just lucky I don't live in that city anymore or you might not have gotten that table 😉 I assure you, there are plenty of people in the area that regularly check Design Addict as well as many estate sale sites and companies so you might want to be careful in the future as good finds are few and far between in that state so people are willing to drive and wait as long as it takes. As for the guy running the estate sale -- he thinks he knows mid-century really well but there are always deals to be had at his sales so keep your eyes peeled. Good luck on your collection!
I guess, but I also watched every dealer in the area plus some from Cleveland and Cincinnati storm the house and literally get 90% of the furniture because they were allowed in early due to online sign ups. This table remained, which I came for anyways. So no I don't think this is luck. Luck that no one saw it on here, after the first day was over, but that was partly why I posted it in Aasbjerg thread.
