Sigh...
I have been looking for the 'perfect' coffee/cocktail table for so long that I've decided it's a mythological beast and simply does not exist. I just bought a cowhide rug for my living room area and I'll need to get a new table to go with it. The one I have is solid and will obscure most of the cowhide. I'm thinking that the best option will be the ubiquitous noguchi table. I hate the fact that it is so commonly used that it's nearly cliche'm but I've not found anything else that I like that fits the scale of the space, goes with the cowhide and my sofa and isn't too harsh like a metal/glass table would be. I'd love for someone to point towards something better.
I know what you mean about...
I know what you mean about being wary of the cliche. I went through this period early in my design fetsih state where I would buy up only classics. Now I am sitting on nothing but for the most part. Sometimes I get the desire to part with some of it just to buy things more obscure. I guess I am being silly, but I have come to the point where I am willing to rid of things that I do not enjoy using. For instance, I am selling my LCW. It's just too low for me. Other than that, my coffee table is a Nelson bench (also could be considered a cliche) and I would be willing to part with it for the right table. I just can't find it. The Nelson is so beautiful to me, but it just doesn't do the trick due to the slats.

I wish I could point you to the right table, but I really don't know any that do the trick as well as the Noguchi ... and in this instance I wouldn't consider it a cliche (being that it does the job right, and is one of the only ones to function the way you need it to). I see that you sdon't want glass, so it's a hard find. You could always get an interesting vintage Noguchi type design ... perhaps Kagan or the like. Have you considered something totally clear? Or do you desire something with wood for warmth. If you wanted completely clear I think the rug would add enough warmth on it's own.
The search continues I guess
Your link was a little too spidery and aggressive for me. I do want glass though and you noted, but not metal. I've got Wassily chairs in the space too and it'll look like a lawyer's office if I go with more metallic stuff. I thought of the organic look but I did that too with a carved Pueblo mortar for chili's used upsidedown as an Eames-like stool. So I am kind of thinking of either all clear lucite or the noguchi or similar. The rug certainly will be enough pattern so I want to keep it mellow. The sofa is the Neo that I got at DWR. (which my sister calls 'Design i Wanna Reach')
I also really really really love John Houshmand's work and but I don't have a spare kidney to sell right now.
And you're right about the Nelson Bench it is absolute positively favorite piece ever. The form is so serene. I have on in the master bedroom and it's only job is to hold one small paper latern and look gorgeous. Well I do sit on it to tie my shoes sometimes. And you're right about the LCW too. It's way to far to the floor for me to be dropping my big ol' butt.

How about...a cement or stoneware pyramid...
or tetrahedra with a large round glass table top in which the top third of the pyramid stuck up through a cut-out in the glass table top?
It would be pretty easy to make (out of cement) and rather striking looking.
Or maybe you could get Koen's elves to cast one out of stoneware in an earthy color that would harmonize with cud skin.
An impulsive thought. Forgive me, dear. 🙂
But there is something I like about it. Most coffee tables adorn a room. This one might be the axis of it.

Some of these designs are ubiquitous, yes, but I wouldn't say their exposure has a trivializing effect on their visual impact let alone their function. Some designs just flow so naturally within a a multitude of interiors/settings that it's hard not to want to use them. I would suggest, however, that the one thing you want to avoid is a place so coordinated that it looks like a showroom or a movie set.
