If you're looking for space age, go to Art & Industry on Great Jones St.in Soho. The old lady that runs the place is super cool. Pretty much every 1stdibs dealer in the world can be found in the surrounding areas as well. East 10th between Broadway and University and Great Jones and Bond between Lafayette and Bowery are where you'll find the most.

If Virgil was rude to me or my wife I don't give a damn how nice a store he has.
I would tell him to go to hell and don't come back..
No Virgil should be rude to a customer

He knew we were not there to buy as we were both in our early twenties and looked like two white Irish kids with no money so he chose to be rude because thats obv what you do to people who really like your shop and compliment you on it ;0 )

some of the wealthiest people i know tend to be rather schleppy sometimes,
I just hate those shopkeepers that think they are something and they are not...I have dealt with them to many times, and the worst ones have booths and hang out at Antique Shows .... they are the worst

oops
Oops. This was supposed to be a response to the thread of someone looking for shops in NYC but I accidentally started a new thread. My bad. Anyway, the lady at AIDS was very nice to us but since we were two young trashy looking 20-somethings, a lot of the 1st dibs type stores didn't even say hello when we walked in or acknowledge that we were there. A few of the shops were insanely nice and those are the ones we would return to if we ever planned on buying anything at New York prices.
