Hi,
I saw a Nelson slat bench in an antique shop today that had a wire base instead of the usual wood, u-shaped legs. The wire base was similar in design to the bases on Eames DTMs. Has anyone ever seen this before? Were there only manufactured for a short time. I quite liked it. Unfortunately, it was priced at $3200 (it also had a Nelson cabinet with it, but still...)

Didnt Bertoia do a bench similar to Nelsons, only with wire legs? Perhaps thats what you saw? Or a modified version of an actual Nelson. Bertoia link below.

I am pretty sure there was a version with metal legs. I believe I have seen it before.

definitely
there was indeed a metal-legged version of the slat bench, as you describe. the link below has something similar.
much rarer than the wood-legged version since only made for a few years -- though not sure which is "better". seems to lack the solidity of the standard version.

Yep, those are the legs, ycl (just with the usual slat bench top, of course). Nice work. So maybe, his pricing isn't that ridiculous...(it's $2400 right now during a sale -- still more than I want to spend, though.) Thanks for the info.

oh, and I was "beebs" (the initial poster), incidentally -- this Nelson bench was in the same store that the Nakashima stool that I posted about earlier was in. I didn't want to expose the stool's location in case anyone living in Chicago had been to the same store. Hence, the new username. I'm a tricky one.
