I recently picked this up in the Seattle Washington area. I know that Herman Miller marketed various lengths of the George Nelson slat bench, one of them being 8'-6" long, with blocking at three perpendicular locations. This particular bench is only 8'-0" long, with blocking at two locations. I know that Herman Miller supplied furniture for the 1962 World's Fair out here in Seattle, and I have a suspicion that this piece, if not a standard offering, is from that order. I have written Herman Miller, but have not yet received a reply. I own an original 5 foot slat bench, so I am absolutely positive that this piece is an original George Nelson. Any opinions or confirmations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Dave

Oddities....
Frankenstein bolts...
Miter joint fasteners (early fillet legs don't have it either)...
Dual row of recessed nail heads (as opposed to flush & single row)...

thank for the observation
I wonder if the, apparent, stronger connections might suggest a more public location for this piece. Once again, making me suspect the world's fair order. I wish I could find some pictures of the interiors. No response at all from Herman Miller. Thanks again.

It's nice
to see a bench with the finish missing, so one can inspect the details. I had not known that a splined miter was the joinery used on the leg member, for instance. . .

sweet bench.
My 48" nelson bench has more of a dovetail where the legs meet the bottom piece. I much prefer yours.
