Hi, thanks for your input. Maybe I should have put 'obscure'? Seeing a few over the years and not seeing anything like them in my profession, while seeing thousands of everything else, seems to be pretty rare to me - plus if you can find another set for sale in the U.S., please forward me that listing. I cannot assume anything because I am a dealer. I don't sell things unless I know for certain who designed them. Norman Cherner also designed for Plycraft, so, should I assume it's him or Mulhauser? I ask for help on this forum to get solid info, not to be patronized. Thanks.

Just adding to this forum about obscure Plycraft chairs. I rescued these last week from behind our local Salvation Army, where they were sitting in the rain, rejected because the upholstery was stained. They have the older Plycraft tag (no zip code), so I assume they were manufactured before 1967, when zip codes became mandatory. The frames are two different woods, and 11-ply. Not as sexy as the Mr. Chairs or Pretzel, but still an interesting design.
ejb - I have four of those Plycraft chairs! In a similar condition with similar original fabric except in orange. I did not know they were a pre-1967 design, as I only have a partial Plycraft label. I have never come across any others either in the wild or online in the five years I have owned them. My plan was and still is to redo them in leather. Thank you for sharing your photos and maybe someone out there knows more about them than we do!
Bluebrick - so glad to hear that someone else has seen /owns these. Where did you find your set? (I'm in west Michigan.) I'm having my frames restored/refinished as close to the original finish as possible. My refinisher was very impressed with the craftsmanship on the chairs, he said most mid century bent plywood chairs begin to separate by this point. He thinks they are oak with possibly mahogany inserts. I have several rolls of Herman Miller upholstery, am having the cushions redone in a spring green tweed, and will post photos when they're done. I figured HM upholstery would be appropriate, as apparently Plycraft collaborated with HM and George Nelson Associates. I also hope someone else will see this and be able to fill in the blanks - it would be interesting to know if these are in fact a Mulhauser or Cherner design. To be continued...
ejp - I found my set on the Olympic Peninsula, but I believe they originally came from Portland, OR. They were literally my first mid century furniture purchase at a garage sale. (How the addiction all started, if you will...). It is funny you should mention that your refinisher thinks the inserts are mahogany because my inserts are very dark in color and look like mahogany. I almost mentioned the difference because yours look much lighter, but I did not. My guess is they are indeed mahogany. Mine are also 100% solid with no separation, despite living many years in an unheated storage unit. Please do share your photos when the chairs are done, I would love to see them! And I hope someone can fill in more facts about the chairs from the DA community. Like I said, I spent some time researching but never found anything at all on them.
Well, hard to believe it took my upholsterer 8 months to complete my Plycraft chairs, but it did. I don't live far from the Herman Miller factory, and was able to find this bright green hopsak fabric to use in place of the original brown wide corduroy upholstery. I wish there were more of these for comparison, as I'm going to be selling them. Now all I have to do is find the original tag I took off 8 months ago...
