My new question is at the bottom of the page. 🙂
I was so excited to get this clock. I won it on ebay for about $288. Well, it came last week and some of the straw is broken off in shipping (I assume). I found two pieces of straw in the bubble wrap. It didnt look so bad initially and I thought I could fix it. Well today I had time to try to piece it together, but it looks like there is more than one piece of straw missing and there are no other pieces in the packing material. The flake of paint also came off the minute hand, but I was going to have it repainted anyway, so no biggie. It is SUCH a beautiful clock. I emailed the seller today. What would you do in this situation? I am zero for three with ebay now. I bought the fake Baughman desk (finally got my refund from VISA), then I bought a serpentine lamp but the seller ended up sick in the hospital (got a refund through paypal), and now my damaged basket clock. I just bought the gn table clock 4760 off ebay, and I hope that arrives all right. Am I making too big a deal about the nelson basket clock? What would you do in this situation? I might be able to glue it. Help. 🙁
I think you have to ask yourself...
Knowing the (damaged) condition in which it was received, would you have bid the same amount to win this clock? I would think not. So, email the seller and give him the option to either a partial refund say 20% or you will return the clock for a full refund.
Good luck!
If all that it wrong with the clock is the
slightly broken wicker, don't listen to all this inappropriate negativity.
Since you apparently have the few broken pieces, this should be extremely easy to repair. Merely reassemble the broken pieces where they should be and crazy glue the part (from the back) and you should be able to fix without it showing unless you look really close up.
Basket clock are fragile, but also one of the easiest to repair without it showing.
If however, you're missing a piece or two
you should be able to match the wicker from something you can find at Goodwill or Salvation Army.
I would also try to get some money refunded...it's worth a try and won't cost you anything.
Of the clocks I have bought on eBay, the only one that arrived in less than perfect condition was a wind-up clock that too-much-wound and when I took it in for repair, the mechanism proved to be unfixable, so a battery motor was put in as a replacement.
If you can find
If you can find a good caning shop they should be able to repair the wiker almost exactly like new. I've seen the guy here in town do amazing things with Thonet & Cesca chairs. I would also pursue a bit of a refund from the seller. I think the plan to ask for 20% back (or threaten a full refund) is a good one. I dont think it's negative to expect something packed well and shipped appropriately.
Thanks for the replies
I looked back at the seller's pic when I saw the damage and there was no damage. I am certain it got damaged in shipping. It was shipped USPS. It was packed well, but it is very fragile. The box was a little beat up, but not terribly damaged. I havent heard back from the seller yet. The caning shop is a good idea Barry. If that would work and not be too expensive, I would be up for it. The thing is that it looks like more straw is missing than just the two pieces I found. So of course I wonder if it broke while the seller was selling it.
I dont know how to be more careful on ebay. The last two sellers had a 100% rating and sold a lot of items. I just want to collect mid century items and I am not sure where else to look.
parcel post
Is that the same as the united states post office? If so, that is who shipped it. I was not impressed with their service, as I had the signed form to drop the box off sitting on the front door for 2 days and they never brought the box. Then I went to the post office to pick it up on two different occasions and the line was through the door with only one person working the counter! So I left. I finally personally handed it to the mailwoman, who brought the box 3 days later. Sheesh.
Are you in the USA?
Parcel Post is the cheap method of shipping packages in the US by the Postal Service. I believe it will say Parcel Post on the postage label.
I have had similar experiences with the very confusing delivery cards. They never re-deliver the package even if you sign the waiver, and they don't tell you to go pick it up at the post office either.... But that's another story.
Good news
The seller insured the package and will try to collect from USPS. Meanwhile, I am sending the clock back and he will refund the money. I guess this was not destined to be my first gn clock. It is so beautiful, though, that I wish I could keep it. But, another is on its way (table clock). If this one arrives damaged or misrepresented, then I will stick with Vitras.
