This isn't entirely a design posting, but since we talk about beds al lthe time, I figure that mattresses are OK too.

the hubs and I have been insearch of a good night's sleep for some time and have been shopping mattresses for a while. We tried the Tempurpedic and I hated it. He was allergic the the price tag. In the end, we spent nearly as much but we are both absolutely and utterly happy.

We bought a Sleep Number. It is quite simple amazing. If any of you have wondered...trust me you will not be disappointed. Not sure if you can get them outside of the US, but they are definitely shippable.

Well...
There's a foam frame that fits inside a fabric mattress cover. Within that frame you place two air baggie things that look rather like an industrial strength pool float. Next there's a foam pad and then finally a quilted mattress top that zippers on. Then you inflate each individual air baggie to your preferred 'sleep number' using this ultra-quiet piston pump an a remote control. It's fabulous, I haven't slept this well in ages!

That's what my sister and...
That's what my sister and brother-in-law have. They love theirs. Do you have to buy both matress and box springs, or can you just get the upper part? I have no need for box springs with a platform bed. Also, out of curiousity, what did you pay for it. My sister's one is several years old. Wondering what they are charging now. I do need a new mattress so maybe I'll save my pennies for this one.

Not even remotely inexpensive
But, it won't lose it's support unless the air baggie fails, so it's a pretty reasonable expense. And since it's modular all the parts are replaceable. I figured, the company's been around quite a while, there's no risk; they'll be there when I need them.
No, you don't need a boxspring, just a flat bed base. We have ours on a slightly modified IKEA Malm bed, which is working out just fine.
They have a broad product range and commensurate price range. We bought from the lower middle end. $2300. You can sepnd up to $5300!!! It seemed to me that everything above what we got was just the addition of fluff and frippery, though.
My back is SO much happier...and I'm not awake 3-4 times a night anymore, either!
