Hi everyone, I have got the opportunity to buy an authentic Mogensen 2204 chair for a very cheap price. However, it is quite worn, a bit stained and has a small cut on the back. I am very torn and cannot decide whether to get it or not. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on this? Many thanks in advance.
Here are my thoughts: Obviously, you find the chair beautiful and would like to own it privately. Am I right? Or are you thinking about buying it to sell it at a profit? That would be a different matter. But if you want to keep it for yourself because you like it, you should consider the following: A chair like that is never cheap. Either it's in top condition and priced accordingly, or it's inexpensive but needs repair. In your case, it seems to be the latter. That means you'd be buying it at a lower price but would need to have it reupholstered. There are different options—fabric is cheaper, leather is more expensive. The advantage: You can have the chair upholstered exactly how you like. The downside: The cost of upholstering it might be higher than the price of the chair itself. In the end, you have to decide how much you're willing to spend. Go to an upholsterer and ask what it would cost to reupholster the chair, then make your decision.
"People buy a chair, and they don't really care who designed it." (Arne Jacobsen)
