an unused HM original would be shiny since it has a gel coat. if it has been well used, the coat would wear off eventually and the plastic would become shinier through friction caused by use (e.g. "butt polish").
the polypropylene version has a textured surface. this too would become smooth and somewhat shiny after extensive use. but obviously it will never have the fiber appeal.
i do not believe the modernica shells will ever develop the fiber appeal of the HM originals.
