hello all, i have been wondering for a while what to do with some pieces i have that are damaged or missing something significant part. its not that i necessarily want to buy parts or sell these pieces, but am most interested in seeing them become whole if possible for someone ( my design addiction started as a drive to rescue and rehabilitate). i am not talking about the more commonly traded pieces, but ones that you cant buy repro parts for or have used parts that are commonly bought or sold (ex. 670s). i assume a number of you have some of these objects and may have a similar interest. examples from my pile include a mathsson chaise with no base (mathsson will not sell me a new one), a glenn of california rolling server missing two saucer shaped casters, and a giani vano table with no base (it was a while before i could id it, all the info is on the base and nothing suggested that anything was missing). these guys could come or go, but it is sad to see them just sit. other than my specific orphans, would it be useful to have something like a furniture matchmaking page? they are so sad. help and suggestion please. thanks, bill

yes
i could get other casters that would work. but i can dream about the correct ones. they are quite unique. it is the same desire to use correct parts for any other redo. you wouldnt want to screw any old swivel base to your 670 if it was broken eh?

sure ... why not?
sounds like you've got the makings of a viable web site. the explosive popularity of ebay alone is evidence enough that packrats* and those who aspire to such abound. [*no intended disrespect in the use of such a coveted title.] the premise there is a simple one: people who want stuff, and stuff that needs a home. simple ingredients, simple idea, great potential.
there's a local guy in my area who started his own gig a while back somewhat on a whim; he called it throwthings.com. the entire concept is nothing more than being an online store for things you throw. he's now the largest merchant for ventriloquist dummies [again, no disrespect]. the fella [business owner, not the dummy] has creatively expanded the "throw" application to include "throw your voice" [as in the case of the dummy], "throw a party", etc.
bottom line: if you have an idea that will serve a given community, and by all appearances that need is not being adequately met, chances are the idea could have wings.

glassartist!
I am in the same boat. I hate to throw anything away and over the years have collected many various mid century things including lamp parts, table tops, legs, bases, drawers pulls, knobs, picture frames, vintage screws, wood elements, fabric, chair parts etc...the list goes on and on... I think my boats abot to sink!

It's maybe not necessary with a full website, unless you have the time and energy to create that. Wouldn't it instead be an idea to create a forum (preferably in an expanded DA forum, also with other special interests. -Patrick, Alix?). A place where people can share what they have, like a virtual swap-meet.

yes
i have absolutely thought of that. one, it did not seem like an idea that was big enough to stand alone, two, i would have a big learning curve developing a website, and three, it seemed like a natural addition to design addict. if you were interested in trying something like this i would love to chat and see if it is worth bothering with. bill

I think an extension of the DA forum would be a good idea in general. I think Patrick and Alix have mentioned that something is in the works...?
It would be great if the forum could be developed into different parts, one for modern design & architecture, one for contemporary d&a, one for questions about renovating worn or damaged furniture, one for reproductions, one for prefab housing and one for glassartist's 'modern orphanage' etc etc...
Still, one of the best parts of this forum is that everyone reads most posts, not only the ones associated with their main interest. It would be good to add some main topics, but not too many. Or maybe keep the option to read all new posts in all forums in one place...
